Plot summary: New York City Police Detective John Shaft investigates the racially motivated murder of Trey Howard [Mekhi Phifer] at the hands of Walter Wade Jr., [Christian Bale] the son of a real estate tycoon. Shaft learns that Diane Palmieri [Toni Collette] has witnessed the murder, but on the trial date she is unavailabe to testify so Wade is released and goes to Switzerland. When Wade returns two years later Shaft arrests him again. When Wade is released on bail again, Shaft quits his job and takes matters into his own hands.
