Lawahez لواحظ Shadia 1957 Egyptian one-sheet

Lawahez (1957) - (Shadia) Egyptian one-sheet

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Ahmed Fouad for the 1957 Hassan Al Imam film Lawahez based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Mohamed Mostafa Samy and starring Shadia [1931-2017] as Lawahez. Plot summary: Lawahez was a bright star among the great performers, who sang and danced with wonder and fascination. Her parents had been sent to prison and she was summoned to visit her ailing mother at the prison hospital. Her mother confessed to her that she was not the daughter of the convicted "bachelor teacher." She was the daughter of a respected man who had married her mother secretly and had not left her. She later married "the teacher" who took advantage of her and involved her in his crimes. The mother died and the girl felt she had been released from the domination of the criminal she had thought to be her father, who had been sending her threatening extortionist letters from the prison. The girl refused to pay anything to the messenger then went to a police officer to seek protection from him. By chance this officer was the son of the second wife of the respected man who was the girl's true father. He spoke to his mother's husband about the tragedy of the girl he had seen in his office and the man realized the girl Lawahez was his daughter. He told the officer and asked him to conceal the matter to avoid angering his mother. The officer decided the only way to save the girl from the miserable night life was to bring her home to work as a maid for her father, his mother's husband, who had taken ill. Lawahez agreed to this because she loved the officer. She lived at her father's house without telling her friends, and the young son, who was her half brother, flirted with her. She and the officer fell in love. The "teacher" got out of prison and went looking for the girl. He broke into the father's home and demanded that the girl be returned to him. The real father refused. The teacher offered to pay to have the girl turned over to him. Then the wife discovered the girl had worked in a cabaret and banished her from the home to return to her old work. The teacher and his gang went to the cabaret where they abducted the girl and took her to his hideout. He tried to rape her but the girl resisted and stabbed him to death with a knife just when the officer arrived with policemen to save her.

Neighborhood Girl [بنت الحتة] (Zahrat El-Ola) - (1946) Egyptian one-sheet

The Neighborhood Girl (1946) - (Zahrat El-Ola) Egyptian one-sheet

Pictured is a 27" x 39" original Egyptian stone litho one-sheet designed by Wahib Fahmy to promote the 1946 Hassan El-Seify 124-minute black-and-white film Neighborhood Girl [bint el-hetta], sometimes also translated as The Girl Next Door, starring Zahrat El-Ola, based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Mahmoud Ismail with cinematography by Mostafa Hassan. This intricate film about life in a Cairo neighborhood is filmed entirely on a studio sound stage and its story, dialogue and screenplay are all the imaginative work of Mahmoud Ismail, who also plays the part of the scheming Zaki al-Fayoumi. The sound stage does not do a good job of showing the loud and chaotic character of a lower class Cairo neighborhood, but that is not its purpose. Ismail wants to present a psychological tapestry showing interaction and conflict among people in difficult circumstances trying to satisfy social and financial needs in various legitimate and illegitimate ways. This early example of Egyptian social realism also features two classic performances by the great dancer Samia Gamal in her role as Zaki al-Fayoumi's collaborator.

Plot summary: Ekhlas [Zahrat El-Ola] is a university student and her brother Salim [Ahmed Ramzi] is unemployed. Her mother [Zouzou Nabil] is a domineering wife and her father [Ahmed Al Gaziri] is a man with a weak personality who sells animal feed. Omar [Shukry Sarhan] owns a dairy shop, but has stopped working to help his blind mother [Aziza Helmy] care for his sisters. Zaki al-Fayoumi [Mahmoud Ismail] is a tyrant who runs a criminal gang. His trusted assistant is Hambaka [Tewfik El Dekn]; the beautiful and charming dancer Hosnia [Samia Gamal] is another of his collaborators. Ekhlas loves Omar, who persuades her to marry him, but Zaki Al-Fayoumi also loves her and wants to marry her somehow. To this end he exploits her mother's greed and her unemployed brother Selim's financial condition. He employs Selim at a big salary and arranges a marriage between him and Hosnia in exchange for the right to marry Selim's sister. Ekhlas goes along with the wishes of her mother and brother and agrees to an engagement with Zaki in return for being allowed to complete her studies at the university, but this does not settle the question of who will marry Ekhlas. Hambaka hires Ganzir [Hassan Hosni] and Farkasha [Ahmed Abaza] to kill Omar to get him away from Ekhlas, but they only injure him. Then they tell Ekhlas to break off her engagement to Zaki and agree to marry Omar after he is cured and leaves the hospital. On other side, to neutralize Omar as his rival Zaki orders Selim to plant a package of hashish in a cupboard belonging to Omar, who is then arrested and put in prison. Selim has an awakening of conscience and feels he committed a great sin in submitting to Zaki. Ekhlas feels her brother Selim has had a hand in the planting of the hashish and tells this to her attorney [Anwar Madkour]. The attorney hires special investigator Labib [George Sidhum] to follow Selim. When Zaki senses that Selim is no longer loyal to him, he asks Hosnia to poison his drink while they are in a bar, but in a dramatic intervention the investigator Labib sitting nearby jumps up and warns Selim not to drink it. In a ruse, Ekhlas claims she loves Zaki and wants to marry him. Omar escapes from prison seeking to prove his innocence. Hambaka and Zaki go to the police and confess everything, while Selim confesses to planting the hashish. They all gather at Zaki's home where the police rescue Ekhlas. A police officer [Mokhtar Al Sayed] shoots and kills Zaki, Hosnia is killed by her former lover, Ekhlas's mother goes crazy and Omar's innocence is proven although he is given a six-month suspended sentence for breaking out of prison.

Cast and crew: Samia Gamal, Shukry Sarhan, Ahmed Ramzy, Mahmoud Ismail, Mostafa Hassan, Zahrat El-Ola, Hassan El-Seify, Zouzou Nabil, Aziza Helmy, Mahmoud Farag, Anwar Madkour, Abdel Mohsen Seleem, Ahmed Abaza, Ahmed Al Gaziri, Hassan Hosni, George Sidhum, Mokhtar El Sayed

Salama [سلامة] (Om Kolsum) - (1945)

Salama [سلامه] (1945) - (Om Kolsum) Egyptian stone litho film poster

This is an original 24" x 35.5" Egyptian stone lithograph poster designed by an unknown artist to promote the 1945 Togo Mizrahi 100-minute black-and-white film Salama [سلامه] starring Om Kolthum based on a story by Ali Ahmed Bakathir with dialogue and songs by Bayramn El Tounsi and cinematography by Abdelhalim Nasr. Plot summary: This film is a musical melodrama showcasing the singing of Om Kolsum. As the film begins Salama [Om Kolsum] is shown passing in silence without returning a greeting from a man sitting with a group of friends. When asked why Salama did not return his greeting, the man tells her story. Salama once lived with her companion Shawq as a maid in the home of Sheikh Abu Wafa. She had a beautiful voice and developed songs during the day and sang them at night, until Sheikh Abu Wafa got tired of her songs and sold her and Shawq on the maid market. She was bought by a libertine named ibn Soheir who commercialized the voice of his new maid. Salama met and fell in love with a pious man named Sheikh Abdel Rahman al-Qos [Yehia Chahine] who was ridiculed for his love of a maid by the other Arabs. When ibn Soheir went bankrupt and sold his maids and all his property, Abdel Rahman came forward to buy her and marry her, but found that she had been summoned to the caliph's palace and had then fled the palace. Abdel Rahman looked for her and became ill; Salama came looking for him, only to find him just as he was breathing his last. The scene returns to Salama, her silence and the man relating the events of her life.

Soon after this film's release director Togo Mizrahi was accused of Zionism and forced out of Egypt. He died in exile in Italy. A brief biography is at cineplot here.

Mister Karate (1993) - (Ahmed Zaki) Egyptian film poster

Shown here is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Morteda Anise to promote the 1993 111-minute Mohamed Khan color film Mister Karate starring Ahmed Zaki (1949-2005) based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Raouf Tawfik with cinematography by Kamal Abdel Aziz. Plot summary: After Salah [Ahmed Zaki] gets his intermediate educational certificate he moves from his village to Cairo to take a job parking cars at the garage where his late father had once worked. He also becomes friends with a Karate coach named Hassan, [Ibrahim Nasr] who gets him into advanced training at a sports club and gives him the nickname Mister Karate. Salah is injured in a traffic accident and comes out of the hospital with a pronounced limp. He leaves his job at the garage and goes to work parking cars at another garage. When Salah discovers bags of heroin in the trunk of the wealthy man's car, he is beaten up by the man's gang. Nadia discovers she cannot live without Salah and agrees to marry him despite his poverty; they go together to his village where they become farmers after all their dreams in the city have fallen through. This film is an adaptation of the 1940 Mervyn LeRoy film Waterloo Bridge starring Robert Taylor and Vivien Leigh.
