This is a US 27" x 40" single-sided one-sheet printed to promote the
1989 Ridley Scott Film Black Rain starring Michael Douglas
as Nick Conklin and based on a story by Craig Bolotin and Warren
Lewis. Plot summary: The city is Osaka. We see gasoline-powered
motorcycles that are too loud and too fast. These are supposed to be
symbols of power but they are actually just big noisy toys the people
in the movie audience can easily afford. People in movie audiences do
not have much power, but most of them would like to have more and can
easily be induced to buy motorcycles with the right kind of movie. The
tough-guy cops in this film learn momentous life lessons about how to
be more convincing tough guys. One of these lessons is that the
tough-guy rules in Japan are different than the tough-guy rules in the
USA. The film has many night scenes and dark interiors creating a deep
mood for an unfolding mystery; this is a feeling that keeps suggesting
something startling is about to emerge, but the tale is really a
simple one about American detectives who have come to Japan to work
with Japanese detectives; the dialogue, like the props and the
lighting, is harsh and meant for younger audiences who like
competitive action and violence. Example: Nick (Michael Douglas):
You've got to choose a side! Joyce (Kate Capshaw): I did: I'm on MY
side! Ken Takakura is Masahiro, the Japanese detective who works with
the Americans to teach them about Japan and help them arrest a member
of the Yakuza gang for extradition back to the USA. As required for
all such films, the mission is a success and at the end all the
participants part company with strong bonds, snappy punch lines and
fond memories.
