and starring Nelly as Lulu. Plot summary: After marrying her for
love, Lulu's husband put restraints on her free time even though she
had done nothing wrong. In anger, Lulu left Alexandria for Cairo and
made an unsuccessful attempt to find an apartment. She met a taxi
driver named Salama, [Mahmoud Abdel Aziz] who realized she had no
place to live and allowed her to use his spare room. She did not tell
him she was married. One of Salama's friends named Kamel [Ezzat El
Alaili] took a liking to Lulu. Salama noticed this and suggested that
he tell her about his feelings. Salama's friend Shahab [Adel Imam] also
had strong feelings for Lulu, which were not reciprocated. Everyone
was looking for Lulu in Alexandria; when her husband found out she was
in Cairo he and his brothers went looking for her. When he discovered
she was living in a man's house he divorced her.

1980 Hassan Al Imam film Don't Be Unfair to Women based on
story, screenplay and dialogue by Faisal Neda and starring Hanaa
Tharwat as Fatma. Plot summary: Fatma worked as a maid in Hamuda's
[Sayed El-Sawy] villa. She shot him and turned herself in to the
police. During the investigation she refused to give a motive for the
killing, but it was also found that Hamuda was shot three times while
Fatma had fired only one bullet. Hamuda had gotten Fatma's mother
pregnant and then refused to marry her. Hassanein, [Mustafa Metwalli]
who had been working at the villa and was tired of fulfilling Hamadu's
every whim, was the one who had fired the fatal bullets after Fatma
had fired her one shot and left the room. Fatma was found innocent.

for the 1990 Hussein Kamal film Light of Her Eyes based on the
novel by Naguib Mahfouz, screenplay and dialogue by Wahid Hamid and
starring Adel Adham as Deibis. Plot Summary: Deibis killed his rival
Hosouma. Hosouma's widow gave birth to a daughter named Nour [Fifi
Abdou] at the very moment Deibis was killing him. Nour's mother hid
her daughter and educated her. After the death of the mother the
daughter found herself alone but still remembering her past and her
desire for revenge against Deibis. Nour married her cousin Mohsen
[Abdel Salam Mohamed], who tried to provoke bad behavior in her. This
got her put in prison for indecency. After she served her time she
got a divorce. She decided to get a job in Deibis's factory to get
revenge against him. Deibis made advances to Nour but she rebuffed
him and he fired her. Nour then became a professional dancer; Deibis
found her, offered to marry her and confessed to his crime. She told
him who she really was and after many years Deibis was arrested and
had to pay for his crime.

Barakat 92-minute color film Love and Position [al-khayt
al-rafi'] based on story and dialogue by Ihsan Abd al-Qudus,
screenplay by Youssef Francis and starring Faten Hamama as Mona. Plot
summary: Mona was a poor girl who had a job as a low-level bank
employee and supported her family. Under pressure from her father's
illness and urging from her mother to increase her income, she formed
a relationship with an elderly wealthy lover. An engineer friend
named Adel [Mahmoud Yassine] who also worked at the company owned by
her lover Abdo [Salah Nazmi] told her he loved her. By this time Mona
was no longer a poor girl. She responded emotionally as a prosperous
woman who was in a position to be her new lover's patron and guide.
Mona persuaded Adel to quit his job with Abdo and start an independent
company with support from his mentor Hosny [Imad Hamdi]. Although
Love and Position is the film's official English title, the
Arabic title literally means The Slender Thread; the tag line
at the top of the poster, quoting the original story by Ihsan Abdel
Qudus, translates as "There is a slender thread between love and the
instinct to acquire."

Yassine] was a fine arts painter who went to Lebanon suffering acutely
because his paintings were not selling. He fell in love with fellow
Egyptian Samia after seeing her sitting on a public park bench and
then following her. After a tenuous, artificial and emotional
relationship with Magdi, Samia died of injuries suffered when she was
struck by an automobile while crossing the street.

Abd al-Zaher. Plot summary: When Ali Abd al-Zaher is hit by a car
after assassinating an army officer under a directive from his
spiritual leader Brother Seif [Ahmed Rateb], he receives medical care
from Dr. Fouad Masoud, [Mohamed El Dafrawy] the father of the driver,
who lives in a wealthy part of Cairo. While under the doctor's care
Ali tries to conceal his contempt for the Western lifestyles he sees
around him among the upper class Egyptians. The film was seen as an
attack on Islam by many in Egypt; Adel Imam remained an outspoken
supporter of Hosni Mubarak until the end of his regime in 2011.

Wahab as Mohammad Fathy. Plot summary: Mohammad Fathy rented a new
apartment where one of the windows happened to face the palace of
Taher Pasha, the father of Nadia. There was a misunderstanding between
Fathy and Nadia when he suspected her of throwing rocks at his
balcony, which angered her. Then he discovered she was the daughter
of the sister of his boss at the Bank of Egypt and that a little girl
had been throwing the rocks. He followed her on the train to
Alexandria so he could apologize and they fell in love. Fathy decided
to marry Nadia. He discovered his father knew her father Taher Pasha
so he called him to get him to arrange for an agreement. Nadia's
father returned from his trip and Nadia was surprised to learn he had
agreed to her marriage to a rich boy. Naturally she did not know
about Fathy's wealth and she refused to marry this wealthy boy, but
when she discovered he was Fathy they married.

to the proposal. When Ashraf presents her as his intended bride to
his mother Eqbal [Leila Fawzi] she objects because of their social and
class differences.
