Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) - (James Coburn)

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) - (James Coburn) US one-sheet

My all-time favorite western directed by Sam Peckinpah, with one of the greatest western movie themes by Bob Dylan. There are a lot of different versions of this film and not all of them have the riverside scene with Slim Pickins dying while Katy Jurado watches with "Knock Knock Knockin' on Heaven's Door" playing. I thought Dylan's role in this was weak, but not his song.

Cast and crew: Sam Peckinpah, Rudy Wurlitzer, James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson, Richard Jaeckel, Katy Jurado, Chill Wills, Barry Sullivan, Jason Robards, Bob Dylan, R. G. Armstrong, Luke Askew, John Beck, Richard Bright, Matt Clark, Rita Coolidge, Jack Dodson

Pretty in Pink (1986) - (Molly Ringwald)

Pretty in Pink (1986) - (Molly Ringwald) US one-sheet

This is a US one-sheet for the 1986 classic Howard Deutch film. Molly Ringwald is at her best ever as the poor girl with guts and character, but this film has quite a few great performances. James Spader and Andrew McCarthy are superb as Molly's good and bad guy rival suitors. Harry Dean Stanton and Jon Cryer also give this film some essential personality. Cast and Crew: Howard Deutch, John Hughes, Molly Ringwald, Harry Dean Stanton, Jon Cryer, Annie Potts, James Spader, Andrew McCarthy, Jim Haynie, Alexa Haynie, Alexa Kenin, Kate Vernon, Andrew Dice Clay, Emily Longstreth, Margaret Colin, Jamie Anders, Gina Gershon, Bader Gowar

St. Helens (1981) - (Art Carney)

St. Helens (1981) - (Art Carney) Egyptian film poster

This is an Egyptian poster for the 1981 Ernst Pintoff film St. Helens, which dramatizes the March 1980 eruption. I haven't seen the film, but I saw the eruption when it happened from downtown Portland Oregon, as did everyone else in most of Oregon. It stopped traffic and people stood on the sidewalks and stared at that giant column of ash reaching way, way up into the distant skies. Then for days afterwards they were collecting little ash samples from the pavement. It was a real show-stopper. It didn't really disrupt much of anything in Portland, but it did keep most people from concentrating on what they were supposed to be doing.

Cast and crew: Ernest Pintoff, Michael T. Murphy, Larry Sturholm, Art Carney, David Huffman, Cassie Yates,Albert Salmi, Ron O'Nearl, Tim Thomerson, Bill McKinney, Redmond Gleeson, Nehemiah Persoff, Brendan Burns, Henry Darrow, Dan Chambers, Van Hurst, Biff Manard, Joseph Benti, Clark Christiansen

The Yin and Yang of Mr. Go (1970) - (James Mason) Egyptian one-sheet

The Yin and Yang of Mr. Go (1970) - (James Mason) Egyptian one-sheet poster

I get a lot of ideas what films to watch from these old Egyptian posters. This film (AKA The Third Eye) can still be had on DVD at very cheap prices because it seems to be considered virtually worthless by the people who have it for sale. There are some interesting things. It was the acting debut for Jeff Bridges and the first and only directing attempt by Burgess Meredith. The combination of extreme badness in plot, music and direction plus an outstanding cast (also including Broderick Crawford and James Mason) inspired over 20 people to write reviews of it on IMDB. The premise is that there is a living Buddha out there somewhere (the Buddha is also the film's narrator) who decides to enlighten the evil Mr. Go (played by James Mason) with a beam of light from his belly. This benevolent act is something the Buddha is able to do once every 50 years in the 5th month. Once this has been done, the evil Mr. Go is infused with the virtues of enlightenment and decides to make available to suffering humanity a miracle laser beam that neutralizes all nuclear weapons and makes nuclear war impossible! The poster art was by Ahmed Fouad, printing by Anwar printers.

Cast and crew: Burgess Meredith, James Mason, Jack MacGowan, Irene Tsu, Jeff Bridges, Peter Lind Hayes, Clarissa Kaye-Mason, Alvin Osteroff, Gigo Tevzadze, King Hu, Broderick Crawford, Jay Adler, June Sampson, Robert Cabot, Live Lindeland

Magic Man (1976) - (Cuneyt Arkin) Egyptian film poater

Magic Man (1976) - (Cuneyt Arkin) Egyptian one-sheet

This is an Egyptian poster for the 1976 Natuk Baytan and Ernst Hofbauer Turkish film Magic Man [Karamurat] starring Cuneyt Arkin. The poster was printed by Anwar Printers with art by Ahmed Fouad. Uncle Hugo from the Czech Republic wrote a nice review of the film for IMDB: The main benefit of this adventure movie with plentiful kung-fu fights is the eponymous hero's way of kicking and beating as many villains as possible. Kara Murat uses an unusual martial art to accomplish his mission- to defeat an evil governor of certain district of Turkey, whose assassins kidnapped Kara Murat's brother and killed brother's wife. Although there is very little blood or gore present in all fight scenes, some techniques employed by Kara Murat bring a new perspective to the genre of kung-fu films. Our action hero seems to be capable of levitation as his whole body in horizontal position hits villains and puts them to sleep. Karat Murat also possesses extraordinary strength that allows him to throw enemies around and a specific sense of humor resulting in various comedic action scenes such as a villain's pants falling down and revealing the naked truth after the stroke of Kara Murat's sword, Kara Murat using vegetables as weapons or a bad guy having his set of false teeth removed during a confrontation.Another thing worth mentioning is a character entitled "Angel Face", an incredibly tall and ugly villain who eventually becomes Kara Murat's ally. All in all, despite some technical shortcomings and a cameraman's shadow clearly visible on one occasion, the creators succeeded in putting together an enjoyable action-adventure with a dash of comedy, kung-fu and Ali Baba's Forty Thieves.

Cast and crew: Natuk Baytan, Ernst Hofbauer, Cuneyt Arkin, Daniela Giordano, Pasquale Basile, Yavuz Selekman, Huseyin Alp, Kadir Savun, Turgut Ozatay, Atilla Ergun, Erdogan Tunas, Fuad Ozluer, Bora Ayanoglu, Arab Celal, Aktar Durukan, Suheyl Egriboz,Mumtaz Ener, Ihsan Gedik

Brave Young Girls (1990) - (Yukari Oshima)

Brave Young Girls [Hei hai wang hua] (1988) - (Yukari Oshima) Egyptian film poster

This is an Egyptian poster for a low-budget Hong Kong girls-with-guns movie about a Chinese girl who goes to Hong Kong illegally looking for work then ends up as a prostitute. She later becomes part of an unlikely partnership with a Japanese female cop in an armed fight against bad guys. Judging from the kinds of posters one finds lying around in various places, his type of dime-a-dozen film was regular box office fare in Cairo at one time, not just from Hong Kong but also from Pakistan, Turkey, India and mainland China. Reminds me of my early teenage years when I'd go see anything showing at the only theater in my town if the advertising looked exciting. The film was directed by Bong Luk, with poster art by Morteda Anise, an artist who designed many posters in Cairo for foreign films. It was printed by Hassan Mazhar Gasour's company Arab Cinema Printers, and the art was probably also commissioned by Mr. Gasour. Cast and crew: Bong Luk, Kam Bo Luk, Daniel Mintz, Yukari Oshima, Kara Hui, Tien-Lang Li, Chi Chun Ha, Jo-Jo Ngan, Pui-Kei Chan, Kwok Kuen Chan, Hsi Chang, Chu-Fung Cheung, Tao Chiang, Kit Fong, Biu Gam, James Ha, Chiang Han, Pak-Kwong Ho
