Taxi Tehran (2015) - (Jafar Panahi) Polish Poster

This is a 12" x 15.75" Polish poster for the 2015 Jafar Panahi film Taxi Tehran written by Jafar Panahi and starring Jafar Panahi as the Tehran driver talking with his passengers about their lives in Tehran. In 2010 Panahi was banned for making films or engaging in political activity in Iran for 20 years after he protested the legitimacy of the election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iran's president and became an outspoken supporter of the Iranian Green Movement. This one was released without actors, credits or official distribution in Iran. The film was smuggled out of Iran on a USB drive hidden in a cake. It received the Golden Bear Award and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival, which were collected at the festival on Panahi's behalf by his niece Hanna Saeidi (who also appears in the film). The film is available with English subtitles on Netflix and YouTube.

The White Balloon (1995) - (dir: Jafar Panahi) US one-sheet

This is a 27" x 40" US one-sheet poster for the 1995 Jafar Panahi film The White Balloon original Persian title بادکنک سفید Badkonake sefid written by Abbas Kiarostami and Jafar Panahi and starring Aida Mohammadkhani as the little girl Razieh, from whose point of view the entire story is told. Plot summary: The Iranian New Year has arrived and according to cultural ritural, everyone must have a goldfish. Razieh can get a free one from her family's courtyard pond, but she thinks those are too skinny. She wants a fat one costing 100 tomans she has seen in a store's display window. Her family thinks this is too much money to spend on a goldfish, but after a lot of pleading she persuades her mother to give it to her. She almost loses it twice, then drops it into a cellar through an open sidewalk grate; the money is now visible but inaccessible.

The film has won many prizes including the Golden Camera Award at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival; it was rated by The Guardian as one of the 50 best family films of all time. Jafar Panahi, the film's director, was arrested in 2010 and sentenced to six years in prison (later reduced to one year) for crimes against Iran's national security and for making propaganda against the government in his work as a filmmaker in response to the 2009 election of Mahmoud Ahmadinezhad as Iran's president. Jafar Panahi just won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for his film Taxi, although he is not allowed to leave Iran.

State Versus Filmmakers-Iran

This Is Not a Film (2011)

Jafar Panahi at his Tehran home with Iggy, an iguana owned by his daughter Somaz, from his latest film This Is Not a Film (2011).

As the film opens there is a statement on a black screen introducing the audience to the filmmaker:

"Jafar Panahi is one of Iran's leading filmmakers and a vocal critic of the government. He was arrested on March 1, 2010. After an international outcry he was released on bail three months later and charged with 'assembly and colluding iwth the intention to commit crimes against the country's national security and propaganda against the Islamic Republic.'

"On Dec 20 2010 Panahi was convicted and given a six-year jail sentence and a 20-year ban on making movies, writing screenplays, giving any interviews or leaving the country.

"While his case was on appeal, this video was shot and eventually smuggled out of Iran in a flash drive hidden inside a birthday cake.

"It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May of 2011."

Panahi made this film-which-is-not-a-film with an iphone and a professional color film camera, in collaboration with documentary filmmaker Mojtaba Mirtahmasb. With all its stark simplicity, it is a strong statement of Panahi's resistance to his own situation and to the current state of art, censorship and film in Iran. For example, this footage is almost completely confined to the space in his Tehran home, and for that reason no women make any visual appearances. Pahahi feels to show a woman wearing a chador in her own home (as required by the Islamic Republic's censors) would be a lie, because in Iran women do not wear chadors at home.
