Plot summary: The middle-aged Marquis de Sade is being sought by the police on charges of inflammatory writing, so he hides in an abandoned mansion and then has a series of flashbacks. The film is a biographical treatment of the life of the French aristocrat Donatien Alphonse François Marquis de Sade (1740-1814).
