This is a 13" x 28" Italian locandina poster for the 1985 Akira Kurosawa film Ran based in part on William Shakespeare's King Lear with screenplay by Akira Kurosawa, Hideo Oguni and Masato Ide and starrring Tatsuya Nakadai as Lord Hidetora Ichimonji. Plot summary: Hidetora Ichimonji is an elderly 15th Century warlord who has decided to divide his kingdom among his his three sons. The sons are each to be given one of his three castles. This leads to war among the sons over which of them will control the Ichimonji clan.

This is a 13" x 26" Italian locandina poster for a 1970s rerelease of the 1950 Akira Kurosawa film Rashomon based on stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, screenplay by Akira Kurosawa and Shinobu Hashimoto and starring Toshiro Mifune as Tajomaru. Plot summary: Rashomon is the name of a ruined gatehouse where three people are sheltering from a storm. They talk about the murder of a samurai, but their accounts of the incident are contradictory. The film makes no attempt to establish a definitive version of the story; its deliberate ambiguity has become known as the "Rashomon effect." According to many critics this is the film that introduced the world to Japanese film.

This is a 13" x 26" Italian locandina poster for the 1980 Akira Kurosawa film Kagemusha AKA The Shadow Warrior written by Masato Ide and Akira Kurosawa and starring Tatsuya Nakadai as the kagemusha. Plot summary: In 16th Century Japan a powerful warlord dies and a poor look-alike thief who had been recruited to impersonate him as a political decoy (a kagemusha) is left to carry on in his place so the death of the warlord will not be known. The thief is not up to the task and clashes with the spirit of the dead warlord.

This is a 13" x 27.75" Italian locandina poster designed by Averardo Ciriello for a 1976 rerelease of the 1975 Akira Kurosawa film Dersu Uzala based on a 1923 memoir by Vladimir Arsenev, screenplay by Akira Kurosawa and Yuriy Nagibin and starring Maksim Munzuk as Dersu Uzala. Plot summary: Dersu Uzala is an experienced hunter who befriends a surveyor and explorer from the Russian army on a mission in the Siberian wilderness. Years later after another expedition to Siberia when Dersu's vision has gotten too weak for him to survive in the forest, he accompanies his friend Arsenev [Yuriy Solomin] back home to the city of Khabarovsk. He is a misfit there.

This is an Italian 39" x 54" two-sheet poster made to promote the 1964 Martin Ritt film The Outrage based on a screenplay by Michael and Kay Kanin adapted from Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon and starring Paul Newman as Juan Carrasco. Plot summary: Juan Carrasco is tried for rape and murder, but the witnesses interpret the events they saw in drastically different ways.

This is a 26" x 38" Polish poster designed by Andrej Pagowski for a 1987 rerelease of the 1954 Akira Kurosawa film Seven Samurai based on a screenplay by Akira Kurosawa and Shinobu Hashimoto and starring Toshiro Mifune as Kikuchiyo. Plot summary: A samurai warrior who has fallen into hard times is recruited by the inhabitants of a town threatened by bandits, who need his help defending themselves. He brings in six other samurai to help with the task, which includes teaching self-defense to the people in the town and fighting the bandits when they attack.
