Shame on You (1954) - (Ismail Yasseen) Egyptian film program

Pictured is a first printing of an 8" x 11" 8-page Egyptian film program to promote the 1954 92-minute Essa Karama black-and-white film Shame on You [haram aleyk] starring Ismail Yasseen based on screen play, story and dialogue by Gamal Hamdi with cinematography by Richard Salama. Parts of the story are also taken from the 1948 Charles Barton film Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Plot summary: Ismail and Abdou [Ismail Yasseen and Abdel Fatah Al Kasri] are working in a shop that sells antiquities. One day they receive a crate containing a mummy that looks like Frankenstein. A a sorcerer [Stephan Rosti] says he will be able to bring the mummy back to life by replacing its brain with Ismail's brain. The plan goes awry when Ismail and the mummy are laid out side by side for the brain transfer, because the mummy throws off its restraining straps and goes into a zombie-like Frankenstein walk, making various clumsy assaults on the people and fixtures that disrupt the proceedings. Revolt in the City [ثورة المدينة] - (Sabah)

Revolt in the City (1955) - (Sabah) Egyptian oversize poster

This is a 33" x 44" oversize Egyptian poster designed by Studio Adly to promote the 1955 Helmy Rafla film Revolt in the City [thawret al-medina] starring Mohammad Fawzi and Sabah based on screenplay and dialogue by Nairuz Abdel Malek with cinematography by Masud Isa. Plot summary: This is a musical melodrama showcasing the singing talents of Sabah and Mohammad Fawzi. Fatima's [Sabah] mother died giving birth to her and her father [Hussein Riad] believed women died immediately after giving birth. Fatima was raised believing this too, so she avoided marriage and the idea of having children. However she still fell in love with Ahmad [Mohammad Fawzi], a boy from a rich family, and he asked her to marry him. Then her father was killed in a factory accident and combined impact of mourning her father and her psychological anti-marriage complex caused her to spend a lot of time resisting before she finally accepted Ahmad's proposal. After marriage, Fatima had children and was expecting to die, but she did not die. This resolved her fear of dying because of childbirth and she went on with her life in "happily ever after" mode. The "revolt" theme in the title and on the poster is about an incident in the film where the family home was destroyed in a riot while Fatima was still a child, and has nothing at all to do with the main story. The image on the poster of Mohammad Fawzi carrying Sabah as an adult is from a different part of the film that is unrelated to the riot.

Cast and crew: Sabah, Mohammad Fawzi, Hussein Riad, Helmy Rafla, Ahmed Allam, Wedad Hamdy, Masud Isa, Shafik Noureddin, Hussein Ismail, Nairuz Abdel Malek, Qadria Qadri, Mohamed Kamel, Mohamed Sabih, Suleiman al-Guindy, Abdel Moneim Ismail, Ragaa Youssef, Qadria Kamel, Doha Nagdi

The Runaway (1958) - (Shadia) Egyptian one-sheet

This film is based on the 1929 Jean Giono novel Un de Baumugnes, and the 1934 film Angele based on the same novel directed by Marcel Pagnol and starring Orane Demazis as Angele Barbaroux. It was directed by Hassan Ramzi with screenplay by Hassan Ramzi and Naguib Mahfouz, cinematography by Victor Antoun.

Plot Summary: Zeinab believed it was her right to choose her husband but her father the mayor arranged a marriage to her cousin against her wishes. Zeinab ran away and her cousin decided he would kill her if he found her. Zeinab went to Cairo where she met a young physician who gave her shelter. They fell in love and agreed to marry in three years after he returned from an assignment in Europe. However he came home drunk one night and raped her. In the morning he was unable to explain to her his decision to marry her. He left and she thought he had fled after deceiving her. She left the house and went to live with one of the doctor's friends, who treated her as a sister. They joined a singing group that toured the Arab nations. When the physician returned he tried to find Zeinab so he could marry her but no one could say where she was. She was living with the physician's friend outside Cairo where she had her baby and was raising the child. She learned from the newspapers that he had become a representative for the hospital in her town. She decided to return to Cairo to ask him to acknowledge his son. When she met him he was confused to learn he had a son. He emphasized he would acknowledge him but he asked her to give him time. She believed he was fleeing from her. Suddenly her family summoned him to help her dying father. She went with him and asked his forgiveness.
