Plot summary: On the east coast of New Zealand the Whangara people have an old tradition of hereditary succession where leadership always goes to the male first born in the chief's family. This film tells the story of Pai, the Maori girl who breaks tradition by becoming the group's first female chief despite resistance from her own grandfather.
