The Night the World Exploded (1957) - (Kathryn Grant) US one-sheet

This is a 27" x 41" US one-sheet for the 1957 Fred F. Sears film The Night the World Exploded based on a story by Jack Natteford and Luci Ward and starring Kathryn Grant as Laura Hutchinson. Plot summary: Just when Dr. David Conway [William Leslie] has perfected a machine that can predict earthquakes, multiple earthquakes begin occurring that herald the end of the world. Fortunately a way of preventing the catastrophe is discovered that involves blasting deep trenches in the earth so artificial rain can be used to flood subterranean deposits of a mysterious newly discovered addition to the atomic table. While these events are unfolding Dr. Conway and his assistant Laura Hutchinson gradually realize they are in love and have a nice long kiss in the final scene after they assure each other the world has been saved.

Plot summary: In this film set in Berlin in the years following World War II, Gregory Peck plays the role of an army intelligence officer and provost marshal given the job of investigating the kidnapping of a young American soldier.

Pictured is an 11" x 14" US lobby card #5 showing Gene Tierney as Mary Bristol and Googie Withers as Helen Nosseross in a scene from the 1950 Jules Dassin film Night and the City based on the novel by Gerald Kersh, screenplay by Joe Eisinger and starring Richard Widmark as Harry Fabian. Plot summary: In its day film critics were not appreciative of this film, but it later became recognized as a seminal work of film noir. In Street with No Name: A History of the Classic American Film Noir Andrew Dickos said "in a perfect fusion of mood and character, Dassin created a work of emotional power and existential drama that stands as a paradigm of noir pathos and despair." The film is set in London and tracks the rise and fall of Harry Fabian, an ambitious grifter who has an unstable relationship with an honest nightclub owner named Mary Bristol. In an attempt to improve his financial situation Fabian opens a gym where he supports professional wrestlers; he soon gets into conflict with underworld competitors who put a reward on his head.

This is a 27" x 41" US one-sheet poster for the 1950 Gordon Douglas film The Nevadan based on story and screenplay by George W. George and George F. Slavin and starring Randolph Scott as Marshal Andrew Barclay. Plot summary: Marshal Andrew Barclay devises a scheme for the recovery of some stolen gold by arranging for the escape of thief Tom Tanner [Forrest Tucker) so he can follow him to its location. This plan eventually succeeds after a series of events involving some interaction with Karen Galt [Dorothy Malone], the beautiful owner of a ranch where he does a horse trade.

This is a 27" x 41" US one-sheet for the 1948 David Butler film My Wild Irish Rose based on a book by Rita Olcott, screenplay by Peter Milne and starring Dennis Morgan as Chauncey Olcott. Plot summary: This film, set at the end of the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th, chronicles the life of the Irish-American tenor Chauncey Olcott and his rise to fame in New York along with his romances with Rose Donovan and the great stage sensation Lillian Russell. Olcott was the composer of the title song.

This is a US 27" x 41" one-sheet poster for the 1942 Leigh Jason film Lady for a Night based on a screenplay by Isabel Dawn and Boyce DeGaw and starring John Wayne as Jackson Morgan. The casino steamboat Memphis Belle in this film became the namesake for a famous World War II B-17 bomber. Plot summary: Jenny Blake [Joan Blondell] and Jack Morgan jointly own the Memphis Belle, a casino steamboat, which caters to an upper-class clientele. To improve her social position Jenny marries plantation owner Alan Alderson [Ray Middleton], to the dismay of Jack who secretly loves Jenny. Alan's family does not accept Jenny, and Jack and Alan's aunt Julia [Blanche Yurka] conspire to sabotage the new marriage.

Plot summary: The United Nations sends a space probe to the planet Uranus, but when the ship lands the crew members realize much of what they see on Uranus is a projection of their own thoughts and memories, including the planet's landscape and inhabitants. These things happen because of the machinations of the planet's master, a sinister giant brain that probes their minds experimentally as it manipulates their thoughts and perceptions.
