The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981) - (Klinton Spilsbury) US one-sheet

The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981) - (Klinton Spilsbury) US one-sheet

This is a US 27" x 41" one-sheet for the 1981 William A. Fraker film The Legend of the Lone Ranger based on a screenplay by Ivan Goff, Ben Roberts, Michael Kane and William Roberts, adaptation by Gerald B. Derloshon and starring Klinton Spilsbury as The Lone Ranger (John Reid). Plot summary: Law student John Reid is riding as an observer with a party of Texas rangers, including his brother Dan, when it is ambushed and massacred by a ruthless outlaw named Bartholomew "Butch" Cavendish [Christopher Lloyd], a dishonorably discharged former major in the Union Army. Reid, wounded and left for dead, is the sole survivor. Tonto [Michael Horse], his childhood Comanche friend (and trail guide and mentor later on in the arts of riding and shooting), finds him after the outlaws leave and helps him recover from his injuries over the objections of his fellow tribesmen. After that Reid and Tonto dedicate their lives to a two-man vigilante crusade against evil, beginning with the rescue of President Grant [Jason Robards] when Cavendish takes him hostage, even though his brother Dan had told him of his low opinion of Washington politicians before he was killed by Cavendish: "In Texas, robbers are outlaws. In Washington, robbers are elected."

This film is an admirable effort to add a historic backstory to the mysterious legend of the Lone Ranger and also to replace the American public's silver screen idea of the Lone Ranger as popularized by Clayton Moore in his television role as the masked rider; its promoters made a financially devastating error and generated massive negative publicity for the film when with litigation they tried unsuccessfully to ban Moore from appearing in public as the Lone Ranger.

Cast and crew: William A. Faker, Ivan Goff, Ben Roberts, Michael Kane, William Roberts, Gerald B. Derloshon, Michael Horse, Christopher Lloyd, Jason Robards, Klinton Spilsbury, Juanin Clay, Matt Clark, Jason Ro0bards, John Bennett Perry, David Hayward, John Hart, Richard Farnsworth, Lincoln Tate, Ted Flicker, Marc Gilpin, Patrick Montoya, David Bennett, George W. Trendle, Fran Striker

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) - (James Coburn)

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) - (James Coburn) US one-sheet

My all-time favorite western directed by Sam Peckinpah, with one of the greatest western movie themes by Bob Dylan. There are a lot of different versions of this film and not all of them have the riverside scene with Slim Pickins dying while Katy Jurado watches with "Knock Knock Knockin' on Heaven's Door" playing. I thought Dylan's role in this was weak, but not his song.

Cast and crew: Sam Peckinpah, Rudy Wurlitzer, James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson, Richard Jaeckel, Katy Jurado, Chill Wills, Barry Sullivan, Jason Robards, Bob Dylan, R. G. Armstrong, Luke Askew, John Beck, Richard Bright, Matt Clark, Rita Coolidge, Jack Dodson
