Plot summary: Matt Weaver [George Segal] returns home to Pecos New Mexico after the Civil War and finds his farm has been sold and his fiancee Ruth Adams [Janice Rule] has married someone else. Pecos is now full of Union sympathizers who resent Weaver's service to the Confederacy; a banker named Sam Brewster [Pat Hingle] who was also responsible for the sale of Weaver's farm, brings a gunman named d'Estaing into town to shoot it out with Weaver. D'Estaing's careful assessment of the town's social dynamic plays a key role in his approach to the situation.
