the 1965 Arnold Laven film The Glory Guys based on the Hoffman
Birney novel The Dice of God, a fictionalized retelling of the
1876 Custer massacre at Little Bighorn. Screenplay is by Sam Peckinpah
and Tom Tryon stars as Captain Demas Harrod. Plot summary: Captain
Demas Harrod and Army Scout Sol Rogers [Harve Presnell] compete for
the love of Widow Lou Woddard [Senta Berger] while they also deal with
worries about indian fighting and tensions with Army high command. As
the film begins raw recruits line up in civilian clothing to meet
their commanders prior to the start of prelimary training as cavalry
troopers in a unit modeled after George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry
Regiment. In short order the green recruits are ushered into a
concerted army campaign against battle-hardened Sioux warriors; their
job is to force all the Sioux onto reservations.
