This month printmag.com has published a piece by Victor Margolin about the development of French film posters during these years and the artists who contributed to it such as Achille Mauzan, Leonetto Capiello, Renoir and Bernard Lancy. Margolin shows examples of the posters from this innovative period in the development of French film and argues that while French film made a leap forward, the posters used for its promotion were largely in a state of stagnation and decline because the poster graphics industry was not well integrated with the French film studio system. Even though Margolin thinks these posters were short on innovation, they are still beautiful and worth seeing.
