The Hunger (1986) - (Soad Hosny) Egyptian one-sheet

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Abdel Ghani for the 1986 Ali Badrakhan film The Hunger based on characters developed by Naguib Mahfouz, screenplay by Esam Ali and Ali Badrakhan and starring Soad Hosny as Zubaida. Plot summary: This film is a remake of the 1986 Houssam El-Din Mustafa epic film The Racketeers [al-harafish]. In the year 1886 Farag Al-Gebali [Mahmoud Abdel Aziz] worked as a wagon driver to support his mother. He was married to Zeinab [Soad Hosny]. His brother Gaber [Abdel Aziz Makhyoun] worked as a blacksmith and married the poor girl Zubeida [Sanaa Younes] after the death of the thug who had raped her during a brawl among the neighborhood gangs. The people of the neighborhood appointed Farag as their main tough guy but he snubbed them after his marriage to a wealthy woman, [Youssra] moving into her mansion and running her agency. The nile subsided, the rains did not come, famine began, the people became poor and the merchants played their games because they feared their stocks would be raided when the people became hungrier and prices went up. Farag exploited the famine in Cairo by hoarding grain. He broke all his old promises and made a pact with the rich that the tough guy had to side with the nobility. Zubaida led the racketeers against Farag who was killed, and appointed her husband Gaber as the new tough guy, but Gaber refused and advised them to rely on themselves. The revolution became collective with Zubaida's help.

Karnak Cafe الكرنك (Soad Hosny) - (1975) Egyptian one-sheet

Karnak Cafe (1975) - (Soad Hosny) Egyptian one-sheet

This film by Aly Badrakhan is on Ahmad Al-Hadari's 2007 list of Egypt's 100 most important films. It is based on a story by Egyptian Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz with screenplay and dialogue by Mamdouh El Leithy. The story is about political persecution under Nasser after the Egyptian defeat by the Israelis in 1967. It includes depictions of sexual abuse of a type that had never been attempted in Egyptian cinema. The poster was designed by Abdel Ghani and Hassan Mazhar Gasour. Plot Summary: The film begins with a radio news report of the Egyptian army's 6 October 1973 Suez crossing as Ismail al-Sheikh [Nour El-Sherif] sits despondent in the Karnak Cafe while everyone else is rejoicing. He goes to the hospital where Zeinab Diab [Soad Hosny] is trying to get admitted for surgery. There is a flashback to Ismail's days as a student in medical college with his classmates Hamada Helmy [Mohammed Tawfik] and Zeinab. In those days they were involved with student activities and debates about politics and ideology. At the same time Ismail was in a romantic relationship with Aranfala, [Shouweikar] the owner of the coffee shop. However one night they were arrested and jailed. They were imprisoned for a time, but after their release he courted Zeinab with the consent of her parents. Then conditions changed. There were demonstrations and the authorities began arresting young people. The intelligence service under the direction of Khaled Safwan [Kamal Al-Shennawi] began using savage torture methods looking for Muslim Brotherhood elements in the population; Zeinab was even raped. Zeinab and Ismail were conscripted for intelligence work and then wrote reports against their comrades. Zeinab started the May movement for the release of Ismail and everyone else who was in detention. Ismail returned to his commitment, put his past behind him and returned to Zeinab.

Cast and crew: Soad Hosny, Kamal Al-Shennawi, Nour El-Sherif, Farid Shawqi, Aly Badrakhan, Naguib Mahfouz, Younes Shalaby, Shouweikar, Mohamed Sobhi, Taheya Cariocca, Imad Hamdi, Salah Zulfikar, Fayez Halawa, Mohsen Nasr, Mamdouh El Leithy, Mohammed Tawfik, Naima Al Soghayar, Aly El Cherif, Wahid Seif, Osama Abbas, Adly Kasseb

Shafiqa and Metwali [شفيقة ومتولي] - (Soad Hosny) - (1979)

Shafiqa and Metwali (Soad Hosny) (1979) Egyptian film poster

Pictured is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Hassan Mazhar Gasour and Anise to promote the 1979 Aly Badrakhan 109-minute color film Shafiqa and Metwali starring Soad Hosny based on a story by Shawqi Abdel Hakim with screenplay and dialogue by Salah Jahine and cinematography by Abdelhalim and Mohsen Nasr. Plot summary: This film is director Aly Badrakhan's revised and very popular version of the timeless Egyptian tale of an honor killing in which a prostitute named Shafiqa [Soad Hosny] is murdered by her brother Metwali [Ahmed Zaki] for dishonoring his family. The story is set in the 19th Century during the construction of the Suez Canal [1859-1869] when Metwali is pressed into forced labor for the project leaving Shafiqa to the depredations of the lascivious male inhabitants of her village. In the Badrakhan version Shafiqa is shot by one of her lovers named Effendia [Gamil Ratib] to prevent her revealing secrets she has learned about his business dealings, just as the returning Metwali is about to stab her with his sword. Badrakhan's story, unlike the original moral drama, does not provide narrative support for the practice of honor killing. It makes a point of showing that the men in Shafiqa's life are just as guilty as she is in different ways and that ethical failings are distributed throughout society.

Cast and crew: Soad Hosny, Ahmed Mazhar, Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, Ahmed Zaki, Aly Badrakhan, Gamil Ratib, Mahmoud El Guindi, Malek Al-Gamal, Hamza al-Shimi, Naima Al-Soghayar, Ahmed Hegazi, Ahmed Bedir, Abdel Waress Assar, Younes Shalaby, Abdelhalim Nasr, Mohsen Nasr, Salah Jahine, Shawqi Abdel Hakim
