This 1960 Egyptian black-and-white film was directed by Fatin Abdel Wahab, screenplay by Mohamed Abu Youssef, dialogue by Amin Yussef Ghurab, cinematography Aly Hassan; it tells the story of a cabaret dancer in Alexandria named Leila [Samia Gamal]. Many of the customers liked her but she resisted their offers of marriage and requests that she become their mistress. She had one importunate pursuer named Hamada [Ahmed Mazhar] whom she always resisted. He was shocked when she married another man named Abbas [Mahmoud El-Meliguy], with whom she ran the cabaret after they were married. Hamada, shocked and disappointed, disappeared. Then Abbas apparently died in a fire on his boat. Hamada returned and this time she accepted him. Abbas, who had not actually died, came back and tried to separate them but could not do so.

Plot summary: While playing a role in a film the actor Sherif shot his colleague Elham [Mariam Fakhr Eddine] after the sexually tormented hunchback Madbouli [Salah Mansour] had maliciously replaced the blanks in Sherif's pistol with live bullets; this was a profound shock to Sherif. His cousin Amal [Nadia Lutfi] tried in vain to soothe him, but she looked too much like Elham. Her feelings for him turned into deep love, made stronger by his determination to overcome his loneliness and obsession with memories. The facts slowly emerged about the incident in which Elham had died.

Plot summary: Laila used to spend some of her time on the banks of the Nile. That was where she first met her husband Ahmed Abdel Salam [Imad Hamdi] and his friend Rafet, [Ahmed Ramzi] who had been in love with her for a long time. However Ahmed was the one she married; they had a baby girl. As the years went by Ahmed's sister Mona [Zahrat El-Ola] kept hoping in vain Rafet would develop feelings for her. In 1956 during the Suez Crisis Ahmed was summoned to defend the country. Laila received a report Ahmed had been killed but could not accept it. After five years Rafet went back to the home of his absent friend. Ahmed's daughter Nadia became close to Rafet, who was trying to get Laila to marry him. When Nadia became ill Ahmed cared for her. Laila finally agreed to the marriage to save her daughter. During the Suez fighting Ahmed had fled into the desert and survived with help from the Bedouins. When he finally got home he was shocked when he found his wife and Rafet together and shot Rafet, but not fatally. Ahmed was given a suspended prison sentence and went back to his wife Laila.

This is a 27" x 38" undated rerelease poster for the 1958 Youssuf Chahine film Jamila the Algerian written by Ali Esserkami, Youssef Essiabi, Naguib Mahfouz, Uadjih Nagib and Abder Rahman el Charkani and starring Magda as Jamila. Plot Summary: The youth of Algeria could find no means of liberation other than battle. Jamila Buohired decided she had to be a part of the liberation front, so she joined Yousef Saadi's [Ahmed Mazhar] secret team. The team was smuggling weapons from the Arab nations and killing French officers. The team had to change its hiding place and Jamila volunteered to help. Soldiers arrested her, but the rest of her team escaped. She was savagely tortured and told to reveal Yousef's location, but she endured the utmost torture without betraying her country. In a rigged trial she was sentenced to death but there was an international movement to save her. According to film critic Sa'ad al-Din Tawfiq this is one of the top 100 Egyptian films.

Plot summary: This film tells the story of a man's problematic descent from a life of sumptious aristocratic privilege to the life of an ordinary member of the wealthy middle class. He never loses his huge home or suffers any drastic losses of comfort or convenience; his journey is accompanied with occasional sweet ballads by Sabah, who finally becomes his wife. As the narrative goes, Prince Shawkat [Ahmed Mazhar] loses his wealth and the revolution leaves him with only his mansion. He lives in hopes of selling his paintings. One night while out walking he sees someone selling roasted corn and tries to trade one of his medals for an ear of it, but the seller refuses the trade. A man named Hamuda [Salah Zulfikar] observes this. Hamuda, also broke even though he has a doctorate in Arabic grammar, buys the prince an ear of roasted corn. The two develop a rapport and the prince appoints Hamuda as his private secretary in exchange for room and board. When Hamuda sees paintings on a wall belonging to the prince's daughters Jihan [Mariam Fakhr Eddine] and Mervat [Laila Taher], the prince tells him Jihan has died, while his daughter Mervat has married Salem [Ahmed Louxor], a mechanical engineer. This marriage has angered the prince and Mervat's sister Jihan, who has had to move in with Mervat and Salem.

Salem's sister Karima [Sabah] is living in a villa with their father Abdul Salam [Hussein Assar]. Karima is a young widow who likes the prince and decides to go with his daughter Jihan to make a secret visit to the palace. Knowing the prince is broke, she leaves him some money on a table. Jihan sees Hamuda, recognizes him and assures him she is not really dead. Karima insists the prince must go with her to the market so he can carry the vegetables and a goose. He begins cultivating his own garden but he wears gloves while doing this to keep from hurting his soft hands. The prince decides to try to get a job playing the role of a prince in a film, but he fails the audition while Hamuda succeeds and gets the role. Hamuda is now able to propose to Jihan. The prince begins composing a symphony at a piano; Mervat and Jihan buy the symphony after a number of other people refuse to do so. The prince believes people like his music until Hamuda tells him the truth; this angers him and he decides to look for a job. He finds one with a tourist company as an Egyptian riverboat pilot and tour guide. Hamuda, Karima and Jihan are with him on one of his Nile cruises. Karima is happy the prince is working and earning with the sweat of his brow. After he finishes his descriptions of the attractions for the tourists the prince gives Karima an engagement ring; Hamuda does the same thing with Jihan--the happy ending complete with marriages! We all knew it was coming.

Plot summary: This film is director Aly Badrakhan's revised and very popular version of the timeless Egyptian tale of an honor killing in which a prostitute named Shafiqa [Soad Hosny] is murdered by her brother Metwali [Ahmed Zaki] for dishonoring his family. The story is set in the 19th Century during the construction of the Suez Canal [1859-1869] when Metwali is pressed into forced labor for the project leaving Shafiqa to the depredations of the lascivious male inhabitants of her village. In the Badrakhan version Shafiqa is shot by one of her lovers named Effendia [Gamil Ratib] to prevent her revealing secrets she has learned about his business dealings, just as the returning Metwali is about to stab her with his sword. Badrakhan's story, unlike the original moral drama, does not provide narrative support for the practice of honor killing. It makes a point of showing that the men in Shafiqa's life are just as guilty as she is in different ways and that ethical failings are distributed throughout society.

This is a picture of a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Mohammad Aziz to promote the 1961 95-minute Zoheir Bakir black-and-white film Life and Hope [hayat wa amal] starring Imane based on story and screenplay by Zoheir Bakir with dialogue by Adly Nour and cinematography by Ali Hassan. Plot summary: The famous soccer player Kamal married Salwa, the daughter of an industrialist, while at the same time her cousin was wanting to marry her. The two lived happily, then Kamal went abroad to play in a tournament. The plane crashed and everyone was killed except Kamal, who landed on the coast of Lebanon. A Lebanese girl picked him up, took him to her family and discovered he had lost his memory. She took care of him, and in his new identity he fell in love with her. Then they married. Back in Egypt after Salwa learned he had died she agreed to a paper marriage to her cousin. The years passed and Kamal became a success. He went to Egypt with his second wife to to sign a contract for a special deal in the textile business. Salwa saw him there and tried to tell him the truth, but his Lebanese wife kept a watch on this. Kamal didn't return to his original identity until he had been injured in an automobile accident. Then the Lebanese wife went back to her country after deciding to sacrifice her husband, and Kamal went back to Salwa.

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Mohammad Abdel Aziz to promote the 1974 87-minute Saad Arafa color film Journey of Life [rahlet al-omr] starring Shams El-Barudy and Ahmed Mazhar based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Saad Arafa with cinematography by Ahmed Dia Al-Mahdi. Plot summary: Salwa was a girl of foreign extraction who lived with her aunt in Cairo. She was a girl with a liberal perspective who loved a boy her age named Essam. They agreed to spend a few days at Sidi Abdel Rahman. Salwa went ahead and reserved an adjoining room for him. However Essam went early too because of a soccer match. Mahmoud, a bank manager, also arrived at the hotel and the booking agent asked Salwa to let Mahmoud use the room she had reserved for Essam, because he was used to using it every day. Mahmoud was married to Madiha, who had gone to the country to spend a few days with her family. Mahmoud and Madiha had a boring life together. Salwa tried to get Mahmoud interested in her and they were soon involved in a torrid affair. When Essam arrived at the hotel Salwa rejected him, and he went back to Cairo to finish his vacation there. Salwa and Mahmoud also went back to Cairo. Mahmoud tried to resume his life with his wife, but could not do so, because when he went back home he discovered she had left when she found out about the relationship with Salwa. Then he tried to go back to Salwa, but she rejected him.

This is a promotional poster designed by Mohammed Abdel Aziz for the 1963 95-minute black-and-white Hassan Reda film Fire in My Heart starring Mariam Fakhr Eddine with story and dialogue by Mahrous Al-Garehi and cinematography by Kamal Korayem. Plot Summary: Dr. Shawqi attended a surgery conference in Alexandria where he gave an important talk. His daughter Nadia was proud of him. Shawqi celebrated the occasion with his colleagues at a nightclub. At the nightclub he saw his former wife Laila, the mother of his daughter. When he approached her she ran away and was hit by an automobile. He then took her to a hospital and they operated on her. He sent her flowers continuously. He had met her 15 years earlier at a train station, when she was running a piano school He lived with her in Aswan where they were blessed with Nadia. He forced his wife to plead with the king and his creditors to postpone their debts, she had to give piano lessons secretly to Aida, the daughter of Alia Hanem and he was able to pay the debts. However Aida had a brother who told his colleagues that Laila was his mistress and began wooing her with words of love. His mother learned about what her son was doing, apologized to Laila and sent her a gift for her wedding anniversary. Dr. Shawqi heard some of the talk about his wife straying, divorced her and told his daughter she had died. Then he asked her to forgive him and return to her former life for the sake of his daughter, but Laila did not agree easily, especially since Youssra was helping her while she was alone. Then Laila finally agreed to go back home and in front of her daughter she became the wife of the father. Nadia objected to this marriage and indeed she ran away from home. She went to her mother's grave which she was accustomed to visiting and started crying. No one but Youssra was able to restore her smile with a magic trick. She promised to draw her a picture of her mother for her birthday, since Nadia did not have any pictures of her mother. Laila had completely forgotten about her daughter Nadia so she decided to leave home forever. Youssra gave Nadia the picture of her mother, which resembled the wife of her father, and she immediately understood the truth.

This is a promotional film poster designed by Gasour for an Egyptian version of My Fair Lady, a 1968 Helmy Halim 105-minute black-and-white film called Days of Love [ayam al-hob] based on the 1913 George Bernard Shaw play Pygmalion with screenplay and story by Helmy Halim, dialogue by Mohamed Abou-Seif and cinematography by Wahid Farid. Plot summary: Sherif Lutfi [Ahmed Mazhar] was a film director looking for someone new to play the starring role in a film about a famous actress. Not finding the right actress, he persuaded Eshta, [Nadia Lutfi] an attractive woman he happened to meet during a trip to Alexandria, to take up acting in the cinema. After long hesitation she agreed and with lessons in diction, posture and table manners he made an aristocratic girl of her. After much effort she learned to play the role and their first film was a great success. She then rebelled against him and he tried to break her down with his egoism; he promoted her personality and the fact that he was the one who had made her. He later regretted this and asked her to forgive him. She did so and they were married.
