The Sparrow [العصفور] (dir: Youssef Chahine) - (1972)

The Sparrow [al-asfour] (dir: Youssef Chahine) (1972) Egyptian film poster

Pictured is a 27" x 39" poster designed by Hassan Mazhar Gasour to promote the 1972 Youssef Chahine 102-minute color film The Sparrow [al-asfour] starring Seif El Din, based on a story by Lotfi al-Khawali with screenplay and dialogue by Lotfi al-Khawali and Youssef Chahine and cinematography by Mostafa Imam. According to a critics poll taken at the 2013 Dubayy International Film Festival this is one of the 100 most important Arab films. Plot summary: This film made in Algeria and Egypt is a reaction to the Arab loss of the 1967 war with Israel. It has a spirit of pride and patriotic conviction where director Chahine attempts to show the war was lost from within due to corruption and weakness in the ruling classes. In one of the film's several narrative lines the character Baheyya [Mohsena Tewfik] leads defiant demonstrations, rejects the defeat and demands that Gamal Abdel Nasser return to the government after stepping down. The sparrow motif symbolizes the brave and innocent Arab peoples who have become victims of national and international circumstances.

Cast and crew: Youssef Chahine, Ali El Cherif, Mahmoud El-Meliguy, Seif El Din, Mariam Fakhr Eddine, Habiba, Mohsena Tewfik, Salah Kabil, Salah Mansour, Abdel Waress Assar, Hamdy Ahmed, Ragaa Hussein, Mahmoud Kabil, Hassan el Baroudi, Nazim Shaarawy, Mohamed Khalil, Sayed Shahat, Mustafa Imam, Lotfi al-Khawali

Return of the Prodigal Son [عودة الابن الضال] (1976) - (dir: Youssef Chahine)

The Return of the Prodigal Son (1976) - (dir: Youssef Chahine) Egyptian one-sheet

This an original folded 27" x 39" Egyptian movie poster designed by Raouf for the 1976 Youssef Chahine film Return of the prodigal son freely adapted from the 1907 André Gide novel, produced in Egypt and Algeria with screenplay by Salah Jahine and Youssef Chahine and starring Ali Mahrez as Ali. Plot summary: "Return of the Prodigal Son is another Chahine parable set between the Arab-Israeli wars. An activist who's been jailed for more than a decade, Ali is eagerly awaited by his family. All hope that this just man will stand up against his ruthless brother's tyranny, but nobody even recognizes the prodigal when he shows up during a big party. Prison has so thoroughly crushed Ali's youth and idealism that he now allies himself with the oppressor." From the Cornell University Library web site. The film is a melodrama/musical centering on family strife in the Madbouli family heightened by the release of the family's youngest son from prison after serving ten years for construction fraud, who turns out to be a disappointment when he goes to work at his father's factory. The family lives on a farm headed by an authoritarian father [Mahmoud El-Meliguy]. The film has also been seen as an allegorical treatment of Egypt's poliitical disillusion following the death of Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918-1970), who had been criticized by some as an authoritarian leader of a police state, too dependent on the power of his personal charisma and unable to create intermediary institutions or adopt practical programs for national development.

Cast and crew: Youssef Chahine, Salah Jahine, Farouk Beloufa, Raouf, Abdel Aziz Fahmy, Shukry Sarhan, Hoda Soltan, Ayda Reyad, Mahmoud El-Meliguy, Souheir El-Mourchidy, Ali El Scherif, Ali Mahrez, Sid Ali Kouiret, Ahmed Abdel Waress, Ragaa Hussein, Ahmed Bedir, Magda El-Roomy, Hesham Selim, André Gide

Mouths and Rabbits [افواه و ارانب] (Faten Hamama) - (1977)

Mouths and Rabbits [افواه و ارانب] (1977) - (Faten Hamama) Egyptian one-sheet poster

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Moaty to promote the 1977 105-minute Henry Barakat color film Mouths and Rabbits [afwah wa araneb] based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Samir Abdelazim with cinematography by Wahid Farid. Plot summary: Ne'ma [Faten Hamama] fled her town after her sister [Ragaa Hussein] had arranged a marriage for her to an illiterate man named al-Bastawi [Aly El Cherif]. She found work on the land of the weathy Mahmoud Bey [Mahmoud Yassine]. She became assiduously careful about Mahmoud's wealth and clashed with the estate's overseer over how to sell the crops for the best price. Mahmoud liked this so much he put her in charge of his personal affairs at his home. He was preparing to marry Nahi [Inas Al Degheidy] who became jealous of Ne'ma. Abdel Magid [Farid Shawqi] prepared a contract for Ne'ma to marry al-Bastawi while Nahi told Mahmoud he had to choose between her and Ne'ma. Mahmoud refused to fire Ne'ma, prompting Nahi to cancel their engagement. Mahmoud's liking for Ne'mat became love and he asked her to marry him, which she eventually did after cancelling the arrangements Abdel Magid had made with al-Bastawi. In contrasting Ne'ma's poverty-stricken heavily populated rural family life with Mahmoud's more solitary wealthy urban life, the film and its title seem to be suggesting large families are partly responsible for Egypt's poverty.

Cast and crew: Henry Barakat, Inas Al Degheidy, Samir Abdelazim, Mohsen Mohieddin, Mahmoud Yassine, Faten Hamama, Ragaa Hussein, Farid Shawqi, Wahid Farid, Abu Bakr Ezzat, Hassan Mustafa, Salah Nazmi, Wedad Hamdy, Hussein Assar, Magda El-Khatib, Aly El Cherif, Hussein El-Sherbini, Nahi Barakat, Mazhar Abolnega, Mohammad al-Saqa, Seifeddin Mokhtar
