This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Ahmed Fouad for the 1957 Hassan Al Imam film Lawahez based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Mohamed Mostafa Samy and starring Shadia [1931-2017] as Lawahez. Plot summary: Lawahez was a bright star among the great performers, who sang and danced with wonder and fascination. Her parents had been sent to prison and she was summoned to visit her ailing mother at the prison hospital. Her mother confessed to her that she was not the daughter of the convicted "bachelor teacher." She was the daughter of a respected man who had married her mother secretly and had not left her. She later married "the teacher" who took advantage of her and involved her in his crimes. The mother died and the girl felt she had been released from the domination of the criminal she had thought to be her father, who had been sending her threatening extortionist letters from the prison. The girl refused to pay anything to the messenger then went to a police officer to seek protection from him. By chance this officer was the son of the second wife of the respected man who was the girl's true father. He spoke to his mother's husband about the tragedy of the girl he had seen in his office and the man realized the girl Lawahez was his daughter. He told the officer and asked him to conceal the matter to avoid angering his mother. The officer decided the only way to save the girl from the miserable night life was to bring her home to work as a maid for her father, his mother's husband, who had taken ill. Lawahez agreed to this because she loved the officer. She lived at her father's house without telling her friends, and the young son, who was her half brother, flirted with her. She and the officer fell in love. The "teacher" got out of prison and went looking for the girl. He broke into the father's home and demanded that the girl be returned to him. The real father refused. The teacher offered to pay to have the girl turned over to him. Then the wife discovered the girl had worked in a cabaret and banished her from the home to return to her old work. The teacher and his gang went to the cabaret where they abducted the girl and took her to his hideout. He tried to rape her but the girl resisted and stabbed him to death with a knife just when the officer arrived with policemen to save her.

Plot summary: Hussein [Samir Sabri] and Qasem [Youssef Chaban] worked with Kerwan, [Soheir Ramzy] the female star of a dance troupe. The troupe fell heavily into debt and there was a breakup. Afterwards there was a false murder accusation and an incident of marital infidelity, followed by a resumption of what had gone before.

This is a poster designed by Ragheb for a 1964 Hassan Al Imam film based on the 1956 Naguib Mahfouz novel Between two Palaces [bayn al-qasrayn] which was published as the first of the three novels in his famous Cairo Trilogy. Plot Summary: In 1914 Fahmy [Salah Kabil] joined a secret national society where Ibrahim [Ezzat El Alaili] welcomed him. His brother Yassine [Abdel Moneim Ibrahim] was in love with one of the dancers and the entire family trembled at meeting his father Sayed Abdel Gawad, [Yehia Chahine] especially his wife whom he had married 20 years earlier divorcing the mother of his oldest son Yassine. Outside the home Yassine was corrupt and weak. He owned a grocery store and had begun looking for a new lover to replace the dancer Galia [Mimi Shakeeb] who had gotten old. He liked Zubaida [Maha Sabry] and gave her everything she wanted. He would go to her secretly and there Yassine discovered the truth about his father. Sayed Abdel Gawad was a respected man in his own home. He would eat alone while his wife and children would wait until he finished before eating. His wife Amina, [Zouzou Nabil] his daughters Aisha [Hala Fakher] and Khadija [Soheir El-Bably] and his sons Kamel, Yassine and Fahmy stood in awe of their father. Yassine was a secretary at the Benin school and Famy was a student at the Law College. He wrote political publications, distributed them among colleagues and hid them in the poultry coops on the roof of his home. At the same time this was an opportunity to see his neighbor Mariam [Zizi El-Badrawy]. He loved her but preferred to postpone the relationship with her until after he completed his studies and the British left Egypt. Kamal was a student in secondary school and participated in many demonstrations. When Sayed Abdel Gawad learned his former wife and Yassine's mother wanted to marry again he sent her son to her to try to persuade her not to do so but he discovered she had already married, quarreled with her and left. Yassine wanted a few days with Zubaida the dancer. He told his family he was going to Port Said and asked them not to leave the house. However Kamal persuaded his mother to visit the shrine of Sayedna al-Hussein, but she was injured on the way and despite the advice of her children not to tell their father she told him the truth. He banished her and then made peace with her again. Latifa [Souraya Fakhry] engaged her two daughters to her sons. Yassine married Zeinab and Fahmy was killed when the British soldiers shot at the demonstrators.

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Walid Wahig for the 1970 Hassan Al Imam film Dalal, the Egyptian based on a Naguib Mahfouz adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's 1899 novel al-ba'th (Resurrection) [voskrecenye/Воскресение]. This was Tolstoy's last novel. It was produced in several other film adapations, most notably the 1934 production by Samuel Goldwyn of Rouben Mamoulian's We Live Again starring Fredric March and Anna Stein. Plot Summary: The orphan girl Atiyat [Magda El-Khatib] grew up in an old mansion with the sons of the current owner (Fouad Bey's aunt) until the owner threw her out after discovering she had lost her virginity, not knowing that Fouad Bey himself [Hussein Fahmy] had been responsible. Atiyat tried to do the honorable thing. She took a job at a dye factory where she met Mohammad, [Salah Kabil] who loved her and wanted to marry her. Things did not go well for her there however; she quit working at the factory and went to work as a dancer for Fatma Al-Falali [Hoda Soltan]. Years later while she was working there she was accused of murder. Fouad Ahmad was a judge on the court that sentenced her to 15 years in prison, but something moved inside Fouad Bey causing him to suffer pangs of remorse. He resigned so he could mount a defense for Atiyat; after much effort collecting judicial papers he was able to get her exonerated. He thought he could now make amends for the past and marry her, but she turned him down and married Mohammad back at the dye factory.

Plot summary: A rich man named Gaber [Hussein Riad] met a young woman named Soad [Hoda Soltan] towards whom he could not express his feelings because her husband Dr. Hussein [Ahmed Mazhar] kept getting in the way. The woman did not seem as if she would be easy to seduce so Gaber sent her husband abroad on a mission to distract him. He then tried to get close to her but she would not allow it; he sent the couple a will leaving a large sum of money to a son from another woman. When Dr. Hussein heard about this he separated from his wife. Soad decided to avenge the damage that had been done to her reputation. She went to court and presented medical evidence her husband was impotent.

Plot summary: Ibrahim worked as a company employee. He met an itinerant vendor named Yasmine [Maali Zayed] and liked her. He told her he knew a delivery boy who looked just like the one who had the job of delivering employee salaries. Yasmine's friend Hamuda [Saeed Saleh] told her she should go with Ibrahim, whom he knew to be the delivery agent planning to embezzle the salaries and make a getaway to Alexandria. Ibrahim stole the salaries and went to the port with Yasmine. In Alexandria Yasmine quarreled with him, broke a chair over his head and ran away with the cash. She went to her friend Hamuda and found he had married his old friend Aziza [Essad Youniss]. Hamuda emphasized to Yasmine that the police were looking for her because she had killed Ibrahim. He pretended he would try to hide her and told her she had to leave the cash with him. Yasmine recognized the deception and told the police about her crime, but then she discovered Ibrahim had not died and they had all been arrested after a chase.

Plot summary: Bamba Kashar is a dancer who owns a famous nightclub. In a tale full of twists and turns her diplomat husband Mahmoud [Samir Sabri] divorces her, then marries her a second time.

Plot summary: Amar al-Zaman was an innocent, naive girl who left her home town of al-Mansoura to look for work in Cairo. Someone tried to rape her when she arrived in Cairo but she was rescued by an acquaintance named Soltan [Sa'eed Saleh] who worked as a magician in a cabaret. He got her a job in the cabaret but she failed as a waitress because she was clumsy. A carnival puppeteer and former ballet dancer named Mohsen [Mustafa Fahmy] fell in love with her. Mohsen was obliged to work in cabarets because of a war injury and doubted Amar al-Zaman cared for him, but in fact she loved him too.

This is a 27" by 39" Egyptian one-sheet designed by Gasour for the 1980 Hassan Al Imam film Don't Be Unfair to Women based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Faisal Neda and starring Hanaa Tharwat as Fatma. Plot summary: Fatma worked as a maid in Hamuda's [Sayed El-Sawy] villa. She shot him and turned herself in to the police. During the investigation she refused to give a motive for the killing, but it was also found that Hamuda was shot three times while Fatma had fired only one bullet. Hamuda had gotten Fatma's mother pregnant and then refused to marry her. Hassanein, [Mustafa Metwalli] who had been working at the villa and was tired of fulfilling Hamadu's every whim, was the one who had fired the fatal bullets after Fatma had fired her one shot and left the room. Fatma was found innocent.

The poster pictured is a 27" x 39" stone lithograph showing the title of the film as the name of the protagonist Hamida (played by Shadia). The film is based on the 1947 novel zoqaq al-midaq by Naguib Mahfouz. Plot Summary: People of various nationalities and trades lived in Midaq Alley. This story is about Hamida and Hassan when he was treating her like a sister, but had no influence with her. Hamida was trying to leave poor Midaq and rise to a better life . Hamida was able to leave Midaq and work at the English prison in Abbasia where she met some of the English soldiers and supplied them with narcotics obtained in Midaq. Her mother could not control her. Abbas the barber was able to attract Hamida's attention for he loved her and wanted to marry her. She neither accepted nor refused but she was hoping for better. Abbas decided to go to the prison to get money. He went with Uncle Kamel the pastry seller to ask for Hamida's hand. She agreed to marry him after he returned. However Sayed Atwan the big merchant in Midaq wanted to marry Hamida too, even though he was already married. Hamida's mother refused to allow this even though Hamida was agreeable. However Sayed Atwan took a fall on the street and died of a heart attack a few days later. Ibrahim Farahat, who was running for Parliament, appeared in the neighborhood with Farag. Farag had succeeded in getting Hamida to go with him to the cinema. He then took her to his sumptious apartment where he tried to kiss her, but she ran away. The next day Hamida went to Farag without returning to Midaq, Farad turned his apartment into a dance school and nicknamed Hamida Titi. Abbas returned from vacation and did not find Hamida. Hussein quarreled with his father the old teacher who owned a coffee shop in Midaq and was planning to leave the neighborhood. The end of the war was announced, which embittered Farag. A drunken English soldier shot at Titi. She grabbed the gun, shot at Farag and he died. Abbas happened to be at the bar and he carried Hamida when she died at Midaq.

Plot summary: The seamstress Dusa runs a house of prostitution through her home. Nadia came to see her about sewing her a dress. Dusa liked her. She told Nadia her husband had a relationship with someone else. Nadia neglected her home and her children and fell in love with Ahmed, then asked for a divorce. Her husband tried to get her back but failed. Then Nadia and Ahmed had a fight and she killed him. The police arrested her; meanwhile Dusa's house burned down.

This is a 35" x 23.5" Egyptian stone litho one-sheet designed by Hassan Mazhar Gasour to promote the 1952 Hassan Al Imam 150-minute black-and-white film Whose Daughter Am I? based on story and dialogue by Mohamed Mustafa Samy, screenplay by Hassan Al Imam and starring Leila Fawzi as Nemat. Plot summary: Moharram [Mohsen Hassanein] is managing his niece Zizi's money; Zizi has killed her father with the help of Hamed [Farid Shawqi]. Galal [Mohsen Sarhan], the son of Moharram, has a relationship with Nemat and she becomes pregnant, but Moharram will not allow his son to marry her. She is obliged to flee the scandal and live with the blind Sheikh Saleh, where she has her baby, a girl named Samiha. Hamed burns the home of Sheikh Saleh when he finds out Nemat is living there. He kidnapped the girl and adopted her. Galal married Zizi. Samiha grows up a poor orphan without knowing the identity of her father.

Pictured above are an undated rerelease poster (top) and a 33.75" x 45.5" Egyptian poster designed by Stamatis Vassiliou and Marcel to promote the 1955 114-minute Hassan Al Imam black-and-white film Flesh [al-gessad] starring Hind Rostom based on screenplay and dialogue by El Sayed Bedeir with cinematography by Alvisy Orphanily. Plot summary: Nemat was expelled from school and became a nightclub dancer after her mother left home. Her father was unable to get her to come back home, and then lost his job when he was fired by his boss, Amin. Nemat heard about this and went back home to stay with him and give up her work as an entertainer. He went out to bring food for her but when he returned she had already left home again to become the lover of his old boss Amin. Nemat's father tried to kill his wife. He blinded her but did not succeed in killing her and was put in jail for attempted murder. Nemat met an attorney named Hussein, who was Amin's son. They were about to marry, but Amin would have none of it and drove Hussein away Nemat's health was destroyed in an accident that left her unable to dance. She was diagnosed with a critical respiratory ailment and Amin left her, alone and penniless. The father was released from prison and made amends with his wife and daughter. Hussein went back to Nemat and promised to marry her and pay for her medical care. She accepted his proposal and put her life in his hands.

Pictured is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Aly Al-Sayed and Moaty to promote the 118-minute Hassan Al Imam color film Time of Love [asr al-hob] starring Mahmoud Yassine based on a story by Naguib Mahfouz with screenplay and dialogue by Essam al-Gomblati and cinematography by Ramses Marzouk. Plot summary: Two friends, the theater actor Hamdy [Mahmoud Yassine] and the merchant Ezzat [Magdy Wahba], competed to win the heart of their neighbor Badria [Soheir Ramzy]. She married Hamdy and they worked together in political theater. The police were chasing Hamdy and he sought refuge with his friend Hussein. He came upon his wife Badria at Hussein's apartment as he was trying to rape her. Hamdy thought she was being disloyal to him. He killed Hussein and was sentenced to life in prison. He learned from fellow detainee Ahmad that Ezzat had informed on him. He broke with him and told Badria he regretted the way he had treated her. Ezzat arrived and they fought. When Ezzat got the upper hand with Hamdy Badria rushed in and killed him, and she was imprisoned. The years passed. They met and neither recognized the other. Hamdy had lost his sight.

Plot summary: This film depicts a family conflict over which of its two sons Hussein [Abdel Halim Hafez] or Ahmed [Hassan Youssef] should marry Soheir [Nadia Lutfi], even though Soheir and Hussein have decided they want to marry. The father [Mahmoud El-Meliguy] does not want to give his blessing because he does not believe Hussein is actually his son; he tries to drive Hussein out of the family after he and Ahmed have been raised as brothers, which proves to be an impossibility. The film showcases the singing of Abdel Halim Hafez.

This is a picture of a 27" x 39" undated Egyptian rerelease poster designed by an unknown artist to promote the 1963 Hassan Al Imam 108-minute color film Shafiqa the Copt [shafi'a al-'ebtia] starring Hind Rostom as Shafiqa based on a story by Galil Al-Badrawy with screenplay and dialogue by Mohamed Mustafa Samy and cinematography by Abdelhalim Nasr. Plot summary: This biographical film portrays the life of Shafiqa the Copt, the most famous Egyptian dancer of the early 20th century, with Hind Rostom in the role of Shafiqa. Plot summary: Shafiqa was obliged to leave her only son in the care of her mother, who had banished Shafiqa from the home in deference to the demands of Shafiqa's conservative father. Although Shafiqa had a vast fortune and some of her best friends were important men in the government, the father did not permit her to see her son. Aziz grew up, came into his prime and fell in love with Soad, the daughter of Prime Minister Asad Pasha, who at the time was himself Known as the greatest lover in his government. Shafiqa formed a relationship with her son later. She invited him many times to her home without telling him she was his mother or that she was a famous dancer. In the presence of his daughter, Asad Pasha was indifferent to Aziz when he asked for her hand, but in turn the minister was indifferent to his wife because of Shafiqa's influence. He then ordered Aziz imprisoned and abandoned the dancer. Shafiqa's maid Bahia became the minister's consort after the theft of the assets of her mistress. Soad abandoned the life of the world, entered a convent and refused to marry Aziz after his escape from prison. Finally as she was dying in his arms, Aziz realized Shafiqa was his mother.
