Between Two Palaces بين القصرين (dir: Hassan Al Imam) - (1964) Egyptian one-sheet

Between two Palaces (1964) - (dir: Hassan Al Imam) Egyptian one-sheet

This is a poster designed by Ragheb for a 1964 Hassan Al Imam film based on the 1956 Naguib Mahfouz novel Between two Palaces [bayn al-qasrayn] which was published as the first of the three novels in his famous Cairo Trilogy. Plot Summary: In 1914 Fahmy [Salah Kabil] joined a secret national society where Ibrahim [Ezzat El Alaili] welcomed him. His brother Yassine [Abdel Moneim Ibrahim] was in love with one of the dancers and the entire family trembled at meeting his father Sayed Abdel Gawad, [Yehia Chahine] especially his wife whom he had married 20 years earlier divorcing the mother of his oldest son Yassine. Outside the home Yassine was corrupt and weak. He owned a grocery store and had begun looking for a new lover to replace the dancer Galia [Mimi Shakeeb] who had gotten old. He liked Zubaida [Maha Sabry] and gave her everything she wanted. He would go to her secretly and there Yassine discovered the truth about his father. Sayed Abdel Gawad was a respected man in his own home. He would eat alone while his wife and children would wait until he finished before eating. His wife Amina, [Zouzou Nabil] his daughters Aisha [Hala Fakher] and Khadija [Soheir El-Bably] and his sons Kamel, Yassine and Fahmy stood in awe of their father. Yassine was a secretary at the Benin school and Famy was a student at the Law College. He wrote political publications, distributed them among colleagues and hid them in the poultry coops on the roof of his home. At the same time this was an opportunity to see his neighbor Mariam [Zizi El-Badrawy]. He loved her but preferred to postpone the relationship with her until after he completed his studies and the British left Egypt. Kamal was a student in secondary school and participated in many demonstrations. When Sayed Abdel Gawad learned his former wife and Yassine's mother wanted to marry again he sent her son to her to try to persuade her not to do so but he discovered she had already married, quarreled with her and left. Yassine wanted a few days with Zubaida the dancer. He told his family he was going to Port Said and asked them not to leave the house. However Kamal persuaded his mother to visit the shrine of Sayedna al-Hussein, but she was injured on the way and despite the advice of her children not to tell their father she told him the truth. He banished her and then made peace with her again. Latifa [Souraya Fakhry] engaged her two daughters to her sons. Yassine married Zeinab and Fahmy was killed when the British soldiers shot at the demonstrators.

We're the Bus People [إحنا بتوع الأتوبيس] (Adel Imam) - (1978) Egyptian film poster

We're the Bus People [ehna bitu' al-otobis] (Adel Imam) - (1959) Egyptian film poster

Pictured is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Mohammed Abdel Aziz to promote the 1978 Hussein Kamal 137-minute color film We're the Bus People [ehna bitu' al-otobis] starring Adel Imam based on the 1976 Jalal al-Din Al-Hamamsi novel Dialogue behind the Walls [hewar wara' al-aswar] with screenplay and dialogue by Farouk Sabry and cinematography by Mohsen Nasr. Plot summary: The story's events begin in the days leading up to the 1967 six-day war. A quarrel breaks out on a crowded bus between two acquaintance passengers named Gaber [Adel Imam] and Marzouq [Abdel Moneim Madbouly] and the bus conductor. Gaber and Marzouq are eventually jailed for their conduct. A group of arrested political dissidents later joins them in the jail. They are all transferred to another holding facility and accused of distributing publications calling for the overthrow of the government; of course Gaber and Marzouq refuse to sign confessions since they have been accidentally grouped with the dissidents. They are not believed, brutally flogged, tortured and forced to confess to crimes of which they are not guilty. Marzouq is later killed by gunfire from guards during a prison revolt. The title of the film is a line Marzouq repeats several times while pleading his innocence under interrogation. This film is widely understood as a fierce indictment of oppression under corrupt Arab governments.

Shown here is a 27" x 39" undated Egyptian rerelease poster designed by Magdi William to promote the 111-minute 1963 Houssam El-Din Mustafa black-and-white film Hero until the End [بطل للنهاية batal lil-nehaya] starring Farid Shawqi based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Ali El Zorkani with cinematography by Klelio. Plot summary: Hafiz Amin was a big contractor and president of a charity organization for the support of children whose members had to share the expenses the organization incurred while achieving its objectives. However Hafiz Amin was actually the leader of a gang that kidnapped children from wealthy families and held them for ransom. Most of them paid with the exception of Shukry, who refused. When they threatened to kidnap his son, Shukry decided to leave Alexandria and live in Cairo, far from the gang. However Rashad, one of the gang members, followed him on a desert road and overturned the automobile in which he and his family had been riding. All the occupants were killed except the child who had been the object of the kidnapping. Hafiz Amin adopted the child for self-promotion. Then he threatened to kidnap Elham, the daughter of an engineer named Mohammad Abduh. His wife Ehsan advised him to pay the ransom, but he refused and notified the police, who got Ibrahim to join the gang to learn the truth about its leader. Ibrahim had been living a quiet life with his wife Fatima and his son Hussein since his release from prison. Hussein was blind and in need of an urgent operation. Officer Nazim promised Ibrahim enough money for his son's operation if he succeeded in helping, and he did succeed. The police finally arrested the gang and its leader.
