Plot summary: Adel believes he is going to die within weeks and decides to end it all quickly. When a thief [Hassan Hamed] comes to his apartment to rob him he pays him 100 pounds to kill him within 48 hours. Then Dr. Nabil [Abu Bakr Ezzat] assures him he is healthy so he tries to avoid his hired killer, who follows him everywhere.

Plot summary: Gamalat [Nagwa Fouad] and her sister Maysa [Youssra] were nightclub dancers. Maysa met Essam, an actor who liked her. The theatrical troupe included Essam, his friend Fotouh [Sameer Ghanem] and a few friends over the objections of Gamalat and Essam's father Ahmed Hafez [Ahmed Mazhar].

Pictured is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Mohammed Abdel Aziz to promote the 1978 Hussein Kamal 137-minute color film We're the Bus People [ehna bitu' al-otobis] starring Adel Imam based on the 1976 Jalal al-Din Al-Hamamsi novel Dialogue behind the Walls [hewar wara' al-aswar] with screenplay and dialogue by Farouk Sabry and cinematography by Mohsen Nasr. Plot summary: The story's events begin in the days leading up to the 1967 six-day war. A quarrel breaks out on a crowded bus between two acquaintance passengers named Gaber [Adel Imam] and Marzouq [Abdel Moneim Madbouly] and the bus conductor. Gaber and Marzouq are eventually jailed for their conduct. A group of arrested political dissidents later joins them in the jail. They are all transferred to another holding facility and accused of distributing publications calling for the overthrow of the government; of course Gaber and Marzouq refuse to sign confessions since they have been accidentally grouped with the dissidents. They are not believed, brutally flogged, tortured and forced to confess to crimes of which they are not guilty. Marzouq is later killed by gunfire from guards during a prison revolt. The title of the film is a line Marzouq repeats several times while pleading his innocence under interrogation. This film is widely understood as a fierce indictment of oppression under corrupt Arab governments.

Plot summary: Dr. Nabil [Salah Zulfikar] took four of his patients from a hospital for nervous disorders to Alexandria believing they would be cured by mixing with the people. One of them was Ahmed [Nour El-Sherif, who lived with numbers and had a breakdown while working at a bank. The second was an amateur musician named Medhat Youssef [Samir Sabri], who competed for a prize at a song festival but failed. The third was Mohamed Youssef the mathematician who went to the hospital because of a personal crisis, and the fourth was Geneidy [Sameer Ghanem] the soccer player who had failed as his team's goalee and who believed there were conspiracies all around him. On the way to Alexandria they met a man named Fadel Abdel Hafiz [Abdel Moneim Madbouly] and his daughters on the al-Agami beach. Maggie [Magda El-Khatib] became friends with Ahmed, Mohamed became friends with Zainab [Amira], Medhat became friends with Madiha [Madiha Kamel] and Geneidy became friends with Rawia [Lebleba]. In the midst of comedic, musical and dance scenes at the beach and in the hotel Dr. Nabil restored his patients to health, and they even demonstrated they were all normal when the police came to investigate a complaint about the presence of deranged people at the hotel. Of course they all fell in love and lived happily ever after.

This is a 27" x 39" undated rerelease poster designed to promote the 1969 123-minute Salah Abouseif color film Some Suffering [Shay min al-azab] starring Soad Hosny based on a story by Ahmed Ragab with screenplay by Naguib Mahfouz and Youssef Francis and cinematography by Ibrahim Shamat. Plot summary: Elham [Soad Hosny] fled from her mother's husband after he tried to rape her and she had beaten and killed him with an umbrella in self-defense. She took refuge at a villa in Sidi Abdel Rahman at the studio of the artist Ahmed Khaled [Yehia Chahine]. She introduced herself to him as Salwa, claiming she had been on a school trip and lost the way. He tried to drive her out but she pleaded that she would stay with him one night only and he accepted. In the morning Sherif the artist [Hassan Youssef] appeared, who was surprised to see this girl. She claimed falsely that she was Ahmed Khaled's niece and had been living in Khartoum. She asked him to help her stay and not travel. Salwa had Sherif make a statue of her so she would have to stay in the villa until it was finished. While Sherif was making the statue he began to love her but Salwa deeply loved Ahmed. Sherif went to his boss to ask for Salwa's hand. Ahmed was astonished, began to be concerned about Salwa and asked her to leave the house. Salwa felt she had failed in her love with Ahmed and tried to commit suicide by drowning herself in the sea. Ahmed asked Sherif to save her and admitted the truth to him. Sherif insisted on his love for Salwa. Ahmed felt the difference in age between himself and Salwa and could not continue with this love. He left her a letter of apology, left the house and took refuge with his friend the musician Hussein Shukry [Abdel Moneim Madbouly], who believed the age difference makes no difference to an artist and that an artist's love cannot be measured. Sherif saw Salwa's picture in magazines. She had confessed, surrendered, gone to trial and been found innocent on grounds of self-defense. The artist Ahmed Khaled left her life and returned with Sherif to make a new life.

Ahmed invited the troupe's star Faeza [Soad Hosny] to dinner and he became known to her as Ahmed Al-Eshmawy because he did not want her to know his real name. However as the story developed Ahmed fell in love with Faeza, told her his real name and asked her to marry him.

Plot summary: Karim's [Abdel Moneim Madbouly] first daughter Karima had breathtaking beauty. She loved a boy named Kamal [Samir Sabri] whose wealth she envied, but at the same time she was madly in love with her cousin, an ambitious engineer named Ahmad [Nour El-Sherif]. Meanwhile her sister Hoda's life had long been limited since her cousin had been chosen as a husband and they loved each other. The mother pushed her daughter Karima towards Kamal, but Karima's heart was with Ahmad. In light of Karima's ambivalence Ahmad saw no way out other than a relationship with his colleague Safa, while Kamal distanced himself from Karima and married a rich girl. Karima had fallen victim to her own ambivalence. Meanwhile her sister Hoda introduced her to an Arabic language teacher at the school where she worked, professor Younes, and tried to present her to him as a bride, but he quickly discovered she was worthless because she did not know how to do anything around the house. She was so interested in clothing and decorations that she became sick, and in the efforts by the physician, the sister, her husband and the father to heal Karima, Hamdi sent a letter to summon Ahmad to come and cure Karima, but she could not accept his marriage. She tried to separate them but failed and became disgusted with her own life. She rejected her mother's advice about making a new commitment to the completion of her studies.

Plot summary: Abol Fotouh, [Abdel Moneim Madbouli] the secretary of the greedy merchant al-Sherbouni, [Gamil Rateb] persuaded Salah [Adel Imam] to go to prison in exchange for a promise of an apartment and a lathe workshop. In prison Salah met the imprisoned artist Farouq [Yehia El-Fakharani] and Ali Shamsoun, [Aly El Cherif] who was condemned to death but had been given a reprieve. With the help of hand signals, Salah fell in love with Faiza, [Soad Hosny] a prisoner in the adjacent women's prison. After Faiza was released she went to get the apartment but Al-Sherbouni hid it from her and did not keep his promise. Salah broke out of prison so he could take revenge against Al-Sherbouni. He married Faiza and remained in hiding until he could travel abroad with Farouq's fake passport. Seduced by money, Farouq had to declare the date of Al-Sharbouni's trip. The police went to the airport but Salah evaded them and fled. He went to Al-Sherbouni's home and killed him; then he was put back in prison.

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian undated rerelease poster by an unknown artist for the 1960 Salah Abouseif film Between Heaven and Earth based on a screenplay by Naguib Mahfouz, El Sayed Bedeir and Salah Abuseif and starring Hind Rostom as the movie star Nahed Shukry. A group of city people got into an elevator going to various floors in a big building. There was an actress who had a role to play in a film about the tallest building. She was being pursued by a man who was in the habit of following women. There was a woman going to her lover, and there was someone from a gang that steals valuables. There was a crazy person fleeing from a mental hospital and an old man who had left his family to marry a younger woman. The elevator stopped working, but the doorman had gone to see a soccer game, so the rescue was delayed. The police were called, who finally located the elevator and broke through the wall. The rescue was made and they all went back to their original plans. The actress completed her job, the thief was arrested and the man who loved women went looking for a new woman. According to film critic Sa'ad al-Din Tawfiq this is one of the top 100 Egyptian films. This film is also on film critic Ahmad Al-Hadari's 2007 list of the 100 most important Egyptian films. Although it was not a commercial success, it was Egypt's entry in the Yugoslavia Film Festival in 1960.

Love in August 1966 large three-piece Egyptian poster

Love in August (1966) - (Fouad El-Mohandes) three-piece Egyptian poster

This 65x39" poster for a 1966 Hassan El-Seify film was designed by Wahib Fahmy and Abdel Aziz, printed by Al-Nasr printers of Cairo and distributed by the General Company for the Distribution and Marketing of Cinematic Films [sherket al-'am li-tawdi' wa-ard al-aflam al-sinemaia]. The actors in the painting are Fouad El-Mohandes holding the undersized umbrella, and Shouweikar whom he is attempting to shelter. The umbrella seems much too small for blocking either sun or rain, and seems also to symbolize the suitor's hopeless situation. I haven't seen the film but have read that the character Farid (El-Mohandes) is trying to fill the shoes of the late husband of Salwa (Shouweikar), who was killed in a traffic accident on their wedding night. Apparently he manages to do this because they eventually marry (the required happy ending for this type of Egyptian film).
