Rose and Thorn (1970) - (Nahed Sherif) Egyptian one-sheet

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Moaty and Wael for the 1970 Kamal Salaheddin musical Rose and Thorn starring Nahed Sherif as Basima based on a novel by Fathy Abdel Hady and screenplay and dialogue by Ramona. Plot summary: Hassan Darwish Osman [Mohamed Rushdy] was a young man from Tanta who had loved his neighbor's daughter Basima for a long time. It was a love that would inevitably end in marriage; he had agreed to this the night of his sister's wedding. At the time he did not realize Basima was pregnant. When Hassan went to Cairo his wallet, cash and credit cards were stolen. The thief [Farouq Ali] was killed in a traffic accident and at first everyone thought Hassan had been killed too. The police even said that to his family. When Basima heard Hassan had been killed she tried to hide her pregnancy, but had trouble finding a way to get out of her house. She later confessed to a taxi driver named Mishmish [Saeed Saleh] what had happened; he agreed to marry her after hearing her story. Then Hassan turned up unexpectedly on the wedding night and Basima married him instead.

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Studio Adly for the 1964 Hassan Reda film The River of Life based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Mahmoud Sobhi and starring Salah Kabil as Ahmed. Plot summary: Poverty caused an ailing father [Abu Bakr Ezzat] to force his daughter Amina [Mona Morad] to marry her stingy old rich uncle Abbas, [Abdel Ghani Kamar] which made her life hell. Then she had a new encounter with her first love Ahmed and demanded a divorce.

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by an unknown designer for the 1977 Mohamed Abdel Aziz film Some Go to the Justice of the Peace Twice based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Farouk Sabry and starring Adel Imam as Masoud. Plot summary: This is a comedy about marriages in crisis. Dr. Mamdouh's [Nour El-Sherif] wife Mona [Mervat Amin] was consumed with jealousy despite his love for her, while his brother Masoud's wife Mahasin [Lebleba] was preoccupied with house and children. They were referred to their uncle Ezzat [Sameer Ghanem] and his approach to his wife Sonia [Amal Ramzy]. He was untrue to her but at the same time he smothered her with love and attention. There were many complications when Mamdouh and Masoud adopted Ezzat's idea.

Plot summary: This is a complex crime thriller in which a briefcase filled with stolen money is passed from hand to hand in an elaborate cinematic shell game, until at the end the police arrest the one in possession of it just before he boards a plane for Beirut.

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian film poster designed by Mohammad Abdel Aziz and Ahmed Fouad to promote the 1970 Ahmed Diaeddin 89-minute black-and-white film The Mirror [al-maraya] starring Naglaa Fathy as Karima based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Mohieddin Aref with cinematography by Adel Abdel Azim. Plot summary: Karim's [Abdel Moneim Madbouly] first daughter Karima had breathtaking beauty. She loved a boy named Kamal [Samir Sabri] whose wealth she envied, but at the same time she was madly in love with her cousin, an ambitious engineer named Ahmad [Nour El-Sherif]. Meanwhile her sister Hoda's life had long been limited since her cousin had been chosen as a husband and they loved each other. The mother pushed her daughter Karima towards Kamal, but Karima's heart was with Ahmad. In light of Karima's ambivalence Ahmad saw no way out other than a relationship with his colleague Safa, while Kamal distanced himself from Karima and married a rich girl. Karima had fallen victim to her own ambivalence. Meanwhile her sister Hoda introduced her to an Arabic language teacher at the school where she worked, professor Younes, and tried to present her to him as a bride, but he quickly discovered she was worthless because she did not know how to do anything around the house. She was so interested in clothing and decorations that she became sick, and in the efforts by the physician, the sister, her husband and the father to heal Karima, Hamdi sent a letter to summon Ahmad to come and cure Karima, but she could not accept his marriage. She tried to separate them but failed and became disgusted with her own life. She rejected her mother's advice about making a new commitment to the completion of her studies.

Eve on the Road (1968) - (Magda) Egyptian one-sheet

Pictured is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Mohammad Abdel Aziz and Ahmed Fouad and printed by Dar al-Kateb al-Arabi of Cairo to promote the 1968 Hussein Helmy 100-minute black-and-white film Eve on the Road [hawa ala al-tariq] starring Magda based on screenplay and dialogue by Hussein Helmy with cinematography by Dia El-Mahdy. The film was produced and distributed by the General Egyptian Cinema Institute. Plot summary: Three young women were alternating between the call of the heart and loyalty to the woman's cause of achieving full equality with men. Mona [Magda] was fully committed to the woman's cause and would not settle for anything less. Nashwa [Madiha Salem] thought it was better for women to accept reality. Hekmat [Soheir Samy] was committed to the cause and raised her voice with resounding slogans, but she inevitably sacrificed herself for her cause after everyone denied her. At the beginning her husband said he was a believer in full equality but in fact he just a follower who felt a sense of superiority. Nashwa rushed into a marriage with Galal, a happy pilot [Abdel Moneim Ibrahim]. Hekmat abandoned her principles in her marriage to her lawyer neighbor. Mona's husband Khaled [Rushdy Abaza] backed down when she insisted and decided to meet her halfway, which saved her at the last minute. Mona had a daughter to whom she passed the torch.

This Egyptian film poster was designed by an unknown artist to promote the 1966 85-minute El-Sayed Ziada black-and-white film Street of the Water Carriers with screenplay and dialogue by Anwar Abdalla and cinematography by Gamal Ebada. Plot Summary: The film is a caricature of the Egyptian film industry as seen by poor Egyptian audiences who dream of participation. It is about a girl named Fakiha [Sharifa Fadel] who lived in the district of the water carriers with her uncle Hussein [Amin El-Heinedy] the composer. Her uncle was a talented man whose work was not appreciated until a film studio gave him the opportunity to write a song for a new movie. When she went to the studio with her uncle, as a singer Fakiha also got a chance for a role in the new film to replace the lead actress, whose singing the producer did not like. Fakiha's fiancee Salem [Mohamed Awad] became angry with her because he was afraid she would get a job in the movies and leave him, but she just ignored him. Fakiha left the district of the water carriers and went to live with her uncle in an upscale neighborhood while preparing herself to become a movie star. She was bitterly disappointed later to find that her role had been given back to the original lead actress. She returned to the district of the water carriers with her uncle; Salem was there waiting for her and everybody in the district of the water carriers was happy to have her back.

This poster is for the 1968 Egyptian 98-minute black-and-white film Daddy Wants it that Way [بابا عايز كده] directed by Niazi Mostafa with story, screenplay and dialogue by Abdel Hay Adib and cinematography by Fares Wahba. Plot Summary: Kuku (Rushdy Abaza) hid all of his romantic experience from his fiance Nadia (Soad Hosny) and he falsely played the part of an exemplary person. He was nothing other than a fashion designer with a long line of models in front of him, each of whom received a kiss from him or a message placed in the hand before the show. His fiance returned from abroad just when he was about to marry a girl other than the one who was causing him confusion, and he tried to hide the truth. After many events his fiance changed her personality and made herself look like a foreigner. After she successfully reignited his passion and interest, they finally married.

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Azem for the 1985 Niazi Mostafa color film The Berry and the Cane based on a story by Naguib Mahfouz (the sequel to his Racketeers), screenplay by Essam Gomblati and starring Ezzat El Alaili as Ashour. Plot summary: After the death of Al-Nagy the old neighborhood boss, the oppression and humiliation of his family by Hasouna [Hamdy Gheith] the new neighborhood boss increased. The mother Halima [Amina Rizk] and her sons Ashour, Fayez [Samir Sabri] and Zia [Mahmoud El Guindi] were subjected to this oppression. Fayez ran away after stealing a vehicle and selling it. Fayez met Laila the owner of a night club and took charge of the management of her work. After a time he returned to the neighborhood a wealthy man and restored dignity to the family. He bought them a home and they moved into it. He opened an office in the Al-Nagy name and increased his wealth. Then the dancer took revenge against him. He lost all his wealth and committed suicide before they could arrest him. Ashour the oldest son married Aziza Redwan, [Taysir Fahmy] the woman he loved. Hasouna capitalized on the collapse of Fayez's financial power to torment the family again. He forced Ashour to divorce his wife so he could marry her. On the wedding night Ashour crept in with a gang of thugs behind him to seize Hasouna and drive him away. He became the new neighborhood boss and got his woman back.
