The Naked Island (1754) - (dir: Kaneto Shindo) Belgian poster
This is a 14" x 22" Belgian poster for the 1960 Kaneto Shindo 96-minute black-and-white film The Naked Island (original Japanese title Hadaka no shima) written by Kaneto Shindo and starring Nobuko Otowa as Toyo, the mother. Plot summary: This is a film with no dialogue depicting the arduous struggles of a family of four, a mother, father and two sons, who are the only inhabitants of a tiny island in the Seto Inland Sea. The family survives by farming and gets the water for its crops and animals each day by fetching it in a rowboat, four buckets per trip, from a nearby island's irrigation canals. Director Kaneto himself later admitted the film's premise of watering a crop manually by rowboat is false, because this would not have been necessary to support the sweet potato crop shown under cultivation in the film. Even so, The Naked Island won the grand prize in 1961 at the Second Moscow International Film Festival and according to the director's account as reported in Wikipedia, it was also a financial success which saved his company, Kindai Eiga Kyokai, from bankruptcy.
