This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Ahmed Fouad for the 1981 Ashraf Fahmy film The Devil Preaches based on a story by Naguib Mahfouz and starring Farid Shawqi as Al-Dinari. Plot summary: The dominant district thug Al-Dinari hired laundry worker Shata al-Hagari [Nour El-Sherif] to conduct surveillance on his fiancee Wedad [Nabila Ebeid]. Shata did not like this job but he liked Wedad and they decided to marry. After they were married Shata and Wedad lived under the protection of Al-Shebli, [Adel Adham] the dominant thug in the Al-Atouf district, who was hostile to Al-Dinari. Al-Shebli wanted Wedad and he raped her in front of Shata. He said his primary motivation for doing this was to get revenge against Al-Dinari. Shata returned with Wedad to his family, who knew what had happened to him. He asked Al-Dinari to set a time for him to meet Al-Shebli in a fight. Shata had advised staying away from his wife because she was about to have a baby but Al-Shebli had refused. Shata resolved to take revenge; when the fight took place Shata killed Al-Shebli, but he was then killed almost immediately by one of Al-Shebli's henchmen. Wedad had her baby the same day and decided to move to another place with her son. Al-Dinari was sad about what had happened despite the district celebration of his victory over his enemy.

Pictured is an undated Egyptian rerelease poster designed by Wahib Fahmy and Mohammad Abdel Aziz to promote the 1970 Hussein Kamal 109-minute black-and-white film We Don't Plant Thorns [nehnu la nezra al-shuk] starring Shadia and Mahmoud Yassine based on story and dialogue by Yousssef El Sebai with screenplay by Ahmed Saleh and cinematography by Abdelhalim Nasr. Plot summary: Sayeda [Shadia] suffered from torment and cruelty after her mother died as a result of the way she was treated by her father's wife. She took a job as a maid for the family of Abbas [Salah Kabil], who was interested in her and pursued her. She fled his home and took a job with the family of Hamdi al-Samaduni [Mahmoud Yassine]. This family treated her with love and kindness. Sayeda fell in love with Hamdi, but she soon learned he was planning to marry another girl. She therefore decided to marry Alam Marghama [Adly Kasseb], a thug and a seller of soft drinks, but later got into conflict with him. She bore his child, but ran away from him because of his violence. In this midst of this suffering she came under the influence of a pimp who got her into a brothel. There she saw Abbas, who had come to a whorehouse for the first time in his life. They reconciled and married, and she bore his son. Then Hamdi arrived and declared his love for her, there were more conflicts with Abbas and she was forced by court order to move into a marital obedience dwelling with him. When their child died she demanded and received a divorce from Abbas. After a short time Sayeda herself became ill and died with Hamdi at her bedside.

The Price of Freedom (1964) - (Mahmoud Moursy) Egyptian one-sheet

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Studio Adly and Abdel Rahman to promote the 1964 81-minute Nour El-Demerdash black-and-white film The Price of Freedom starring Mahmoud Moursy adapted for cinema by Naguib Mahfouz from the 1948 play Montserrat by Emmanuel Robles based on an Arabic translation done in Lebanon by Sohail Idris. The screenplay was done by Lutfy El-Kholy and Tulba Radwan and cinematography was by Masud Isa. The components of the story are taken directly from the original play with changes of name and locale to suit the Egyptian environment. Plot summary: During the British occupation of Egypt (1882-1956) there was a secret organization led by a young fighter named Ahmed Abdel Hafiz. The organization was opposed to the occupying forces. The British governor ordered an Egyptian officer to find the chief of the organization quickly. If this could not be done it would be necessary to arrest the first six people to pass on the street in front of the office and kill them by firing squad. The officer was not able to find the fighter so six people were arrested, including a cart driver, a merchant who had left a dinner party for his wedding, a student whose brother had died as a martyr during his resistance to the occupation, a mother who was returning to her small children who had no one but her and were waiting for her return at the time, and a pretty girl who was singing a Sayed Darwish patriotic tune. The randomly arrested bystanders were left alone with the Egyptian officer and told they had one hour to persuade him to divulge the location of Ahmed Abdel Hafiz. When this did not produce the desired results, the British officer prepared to shoot the innocents, but before doing that he shot and killed the Egyptian officer. The multiple venues where this play has appeared in film and on stage were traced by Nehad Selaiha for Al-Ahram Weekly on 20 February 2013.

Pictured are two promotional posters for the 110-minute 1985 Ashraf Fahmy color film Divorced Woman [emra'a motlaqa] starring Naglaa Fathy as Salwa based on a story by Hassan Shah with screenplay and dialogue by Mostafa Moharram and cinematography by Mohsen Nasr. Plot summary: Zeinab [Samira Ahmed] was a nurse married to Fathy, [Mahmoud Yassine] an ambitious bank employee who worked his way into a big bank center then married the secretary Salwa. He threw Zeinab out of his apartment after divorcing her because her social standing was not high enough. Zeinab went to a judge and got an order allowing her to stay in the apartment with Fathy and Salwa because she was pregnant. She tried to keep the baby so she could remain alone in the apartment after the child was born, but she finally gave up and left. Salwa sympathized with Zeinab because of her financial situation. Zeinab finally gave in to the teacher Fahim [Aly El Cherif] who wanted to marry her, even though she was not happy about it and had refused him repeatedly, because marrying him would provide her with a secure home.

This film is based on a novel by Egyptian Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz, screenplay Mahmoud El Leithy and Salah Jahine, cinematography by Abelhalim Nasr. Plot Summary: Amira (Soad Hosny) was devoted to a job in a company while supporting her family. She took up social work and organized a company Easter trip. She met the important and influential employee Megdi (Hussein Fahmy). He was also the husband of the daughter of the chairman of the Board of Directors, named Nabila (Karima Mokhtar). Love developed between Megdi and Amira and he married Amira secretly. When he told his wife about the relationship she demanded a divorce. Then Amira was fired and he felt complete remorse. He resigned from the company, announced his marriage to Amira and the two began married life together.
