1960 Ramses Naguib film Baheyya based on a story by Hamed Abdel
Aziz, screenplay and dialogue by Youssef El Sebai and starring Lobna
Abdel Aziz as Beheyya. Plot summary: This film is a tale of murder,
corruption and blood vengeance directed by Ramses Naguib. Baheyya and
Yassine [Rushdy Abaza] had promised to marry but the death of
Baheyya's father Marzouq ruined everything. The girl decided not to
marry before taking revenge against her father's murderer. Yassine
tried to get her to change her mind but could not do so. He went into
the military service. The bey who was running things for his own
benefit took control of a large part of the village with the help of
Sheikh Abdul Rahim [Hussein Riad], who had a good reputation among the
people. Two people close to Baheyya told her the Sheikh was the
murderer of her father. Sheikh Hamza the father of Yassine was
murdered, which led Yassine to seek revenge for his father. He became
hostile to Beheyya thinking she was the cause of his father's death.
Baheyya went to the Bey's compound to avenge her father, but it was
Abdul Rahim who killed his father, took Baheyya hostage and fled.
Yassine pursued him to save Baheyya and avenge his father. The police
came to intervene after one of the Sheikh's victims cut out his tongue
in retaliation.

suffered from torment and cruelty after her mother died as a result of
the way she was treated by her father's wife. She took a job as a
maid for the family of Abbas [Salah Kabil], who was interested in her
and pursued her. She fled his home and took a job with the family of
Hamdi al-Samaduni [Mahmoud Yassine]. This family treated her with
love and kindness. Sayeda fell in love with Hamdi, but she soon
learned he was planning to marry another girl. She therefore decided
to marry Alam Marghama [Adly Kasseb], a thug and a seller of soft
drinks, but later got into conflict with him. She bore his child, but
ran away from him because of his violence. In this midst of this
suffering she came under the influence of a pimp who got her into a
brothel. There she saw Abbas, who had come to a whorehouse for the
first time in his life. They reconciled and married, and she bore his
son. Then Hamdi arrived and declared his love for her, there were
more conflicts with Abbas and she was forced by court order to move
into a marital obedience dwelling with him. When their child died she
demanded and received a divorce from Abbas. After a short time Sayeda
herself became ill and died with Hamdi at her bedside.

Cairo to teach and on her first job she quarreled with Hoda Abdel
Fattah [Magda El-Khatib], the daughter of a former minster and head
of one of the nationalist political parties. Hoda had lost her mother
when she was a child and this had made her stubborn and spoiled. Her
father [Zaki Rostom] sent for Nabila to tell her this and a strong
relationship developed between them which resulted in their marriage,
even though she had been in love with the journalist Mahmoud Kamal
[Shukry Sarhan] since they were children. However Mahmoud had not
wanted to marry her because he was afraid a marriage with a village
girl would hurt his career; he was in Algeria covering the
revolution when Nabila married Abdel Fattah. He returned to Cairo
with the intention of marrying her, only to find that he had missed
his opportunity. Nabila was also still in love with Mahmoud and they
remained friends. Mahmoud was later falsely accused of a political
murder and sentenced to death, but Nabila testified at the trial that
he had been with her, so he was acquitted. However they were never
able to marry.

distributed by the Sharq Distribution Company. Plot summary: This
film served as a vehicle for singing sensation Abdel Halim Hafez to
appear on film before his legions of fans in the role of Abdel Moneim
Sabry. It served the same purpose for his Lebanese costar Sabah,
appearing in the film as Karima. Plot summary: Abdel Moneim Sabry was an obscure
musician on Mohammad Ali Street. He was discovered by a prominent
public figure and agreed to teach him the principles of music; this
led to him joining a music club as a teacher, but he had to put on a
false beard and moustache to meet a membership requirement. At the
club he met two girls named Karima and Mervat who wagered with each
other they could make him cut off his beard. Karima asked him to do
this, and when he refused she threatened to kill herself. She jumped
into the water. He jumped in to try to save her, even though he was
not a good swimmer, then she saved him and got him out. The water had
removed his beard and moustache and he was obliged to admit to her
that they had been fakes. He was then ejected from the club for
having a false moustache and beard and had to go back to Mohammad Ali
Street. Karima stayed with him and arranged for him to sing at a
party at the Opera House; Abdel Moneim eventually realized Karima
loved him and married her.

the 1966 Hassan El-Seify film Love's Lamentations [mabka
al-'oshaq] based on a story by Youssef El Sebai with dialogue and
screenplay by Mohamed Osman and cinematography by Kamal Korayem. Plot
summary: Engineer Shab (Rushdy Abaza) was living happily when his wife
died in an automobile accident, leaving him with a small daughter.
Because he was a petroleum engineer, he had to be away from home. He
fell in love with a maid (Soad Hosny) who was coming to the home.
He saw her beauty once when he came upon her washing her clothing in
the bathroom. He took her with him to his home in Switzerland where
he worked. One night he raped her. Then when she became pregnant he
demanded that she get an abortion, but a physician told him this would
endanger her life. This was a crisis for the engineer, and the maid
would not stop crying. The little girl saw how sad the maid was and
realized her father was the cause of the problem. She tried to kill
herself; this prompted the father to correct his mistake and marry
the maid.
