Jesus (1979) - (Brian Deacon) US one-sheet

This is a 27" x 41" US one-sheet poster for the original 1979 John Krish and Peter Sykes film Jesus AKA The Jesus Film based primarily on the Biblical Gospel of Luke with screenplay by Barnet Bain and starring Brian Deacon as Jesus. Synopsis: According to Wikipedia, the Gospel of Luke was chosen for this film because it is considered the most complete of the Biblical gospels, and an early decision was made by the film's producers that the film would be based on only one gospel. The film's storyline closely follows the version of Luke found in The Good News Bible and makes a point of not adding embellishments, although cinematic smoke and mirrors such as the use of echo effects during important spoken segments and various halos and hazes at strategic moments are apparently OK. There is also a concluding exhortation and invitation to convert that does not come from the book of Luke. The film was made in various parts of the Middle East using Israeli actors. Producer John Heyman dubbed over all the actor voices except the voice of Brian Deacon because he thought they were too high. The Warner Brothers 1979 commercial release promoted by this poster lost $2 million and was seen as unimaginative by critics, but since then the film has become a staple in the evangelical toolbox; its promoters claim it has become the most watched film of all time. It has been translated into 1100 languages and still receives wide international distribution on DVD through Internet sales and missionary work, sponsored by Bill Bright's Jesus Film Project. For more information see the Wikipedia article about this film and the links in its footnotes.
