Plot summary: A crew of Russian road builders comes across an unmarked grave containing the bodies of five Soviet soldiers killed fighting the Germans on the Eastern Front during World War II. They move the tomb to a nearby hill, mark it with a red star and continue construction of the road. A worker named Sergey is given the task of identifying the bodies. He finds their names and reconstructs the chronology of the events leading to their deaths; their names are written on a monument on the hill. The film alternates between reenactments of the fighting in which the soldiers were killed and events in the lives of the road building crew.
