Yasmin ياسمين Anwar Wagdi 1950 Egyptian film program

Yasmin (1950) - (Feyrouz) Iranian Egyptian film program

This is a 6.25" x 9.25" 20-page Egyptian program for the 1950 musical Yasmin written and directed by Anwar Wagdi with screenplay and dialogue by Abou Seoud El-Ibiary and starring Feyrouz as Yasmin/Atuta. Plot summary: The head of the family Adel [Mohamamd al-Dib] did not want another daughter, so when Yasmin was born he left her at the door of a shelter. Adel later died; the girl grew up and ran away from the shelter to join a gang of pickpockets as Atuta. She happened to meet an unemployed trumpet player named Wahid [Anwar Wagdi] who asked her to help him with his act, stop stealing and repent. She lived with him for a time but got tired of the respectable life and went back to the gang. Wahid discovered that Atuta was a rich man's daughter. When Atuta's gang robbed her grandfather's [Zaki Rostom] villa the gang was arrested; Atuta became Yasmin again and went back to her mother, [Madiha Yousri] who married Wahid.

Scheherezade (1946) - (Hussein Sedki) Egyptian film program

This is an original year printing of a 9.25" x 6.75" 12-page Egyptian program for the 1946 Fouad El Jazairly 100-minute black-and-white film Scheherezade [shahrzad] starring Hussein Sedki based on a screenplay by Fouad El Jazairly with cinematography by Mohamed Abdel Aziz. The film was produced by Modern Egypt Films and distributed by Montakhebat Behna. Plot Summary: The young sultan Shahriar announced his desire to marry, then chose a bride who betrayed him. This transformed his attitude towards women. He declared women were only good for enjoyment and did not deserve wealth. He then declared he would marry a virgin every night, then kill her at dawn after he had enjoyed her. After his swordsman had killed many of them he chose a minister's daughter named Scheherezade who had decided to save other girls from this oppressive sultan. She told him a story that did not end by dawn so he did not kill her, hoping the story would end the next night. However when she finished the story the next night he let her start another. This continued for 1001 nights. She was able to win Shahriar's heart and save herself as well as all the other women in the kingdom. This made her an immortal legend.

Plot summary: When the composer Ibrahim was being treated for loss of memory he saw his former fiancé Ragia, who was living with her grandfather in Alexandria. She emphasized that she loved him and wanted to help him; she also admitted that her grandfather was opposed to their marriage.

Pictured is an Egyptian poster designed by Fawzi to promote the 114-minute 1957 Essa Karama black-and-white film Ismail Yassine at the Wax Museum [ismail yasseen fi mathaf al-shami] starring Ismail Yasseen based on story and screenplay by Gamal Hamdi and Essa Karama, dialogue by Gamal Hamdi and cinematography by Bruno Salvi. Plot summary: A police officer discovered a plan hatched by some gang members to smuggle jewelry inside some wax figures. Two gravediggers Ibrahim and Abdou [Ismail Yasseen and Abdel Fatah Al Kasri] became involved in a plan bury the statues. A dancer named Kitty came to the museum looking for her lover and pretended she was a statue for the benefit of the gravediggers. After a long series of comedic sketches and heinous murders among the figures in the wax museum, the officer finally discovered to his surprise that the gang leader was a woman, who fell off a roof to her death almost immediately after her mask was removed.

Shown here is a 27" x 39" undated rerelease poster designed by an unknown artist for the 1956 139-minute Hassan El-Seify black-and-white film Samara starring Taheya Cariocca based on story and screenplay by Mahmoud Ismail with dialogue by Abdel Moneim El-Sebai and cinematography by Mahmoud Nasr. Plot summary: This is an Egyptian noir style crime thriller, featuring a classy 1952 Packard Mayfair convertible as an Egyptian gang's vehicle of choice for its various criminal errands. Soltan [Mahmoud Ismail] was a big-time smuggler who loved Samara [Taheya Cariocca]. He married her and drew her into his criminal affairs; she became influential in the affairs of his gang. When the police sent an escaped convict named Abu Shefa [Mohsen Sarhan] into their midst as an informer, Samara fell in love with him. After Samara flirted with him playfully at a nightclub, Soltan's boss Wagih [Mahmoud El-Meliguy] also fell in love with Samara, although she did not feel the same way about him. Wagih, Samara and Soltan went to Suez together to receive a shipment of smuggled hashish. The police followed them there and monitored their activities. When the police were closing in later for a final arrest in Cairo they shot Samara while she was in Abu Shefa's arms.

This is a first printing of a 45" x 34.5" Egyptian poster designed by Ahmed Fouad and printed by Raghaeb Printers to promote the 1944 110-minute black-and-white Niazi Mostafa film Hababa starring Aziza Amir based on a screenplay by Niazi Mostafa with story and dialogue by Ahmed Fathy and cinematography by Mostafa Hassan. The film was produced and distributed by Studio Masr. Plot summary: Prince Zayed fell in love with his neighbor Hababa who sang like an angel, but there were jealous neighbors who wanted to separate them and they succeeding in banishing Hababa from the palace. Prince Zayed became caliph and increased his power. He discovered he could not live without Hababa and went looking for her. He finally found her and the lovers were reunited, but his love for Hababa created social and political problems for him. Hababa realized this and decided to get out of his life. She committed suicide with poison and the prince lived in sorrow for his lost love for the rest of his life.

Cairo Station (1958) - (dir: Youssef Chahine) Egyptian one-sheet

This landmark Egyptian film was directed by Youssef Chahine. Cinematography was by Alevise Orfanelli, dialogue was by Mohammad Abu Youssef and the story and screenplay were by Abdel Hai Adib. It is on film critic Ahmad Al-Hadari's 2007 list of the 100 most important Egyptian films. Plot summary: Kinawy (Youssef Chahine) was a hard-working newspaper seller at Cairo Station who suffered from a physical handicap. He was always looking at the pictures of beautiful women in the publications he sold. Hannouma (Hind Rostom) was an attractive young woman who worked at Cairo Station selling ice cream and leading a team of workers at the official canteen. She wanted to live a free life and work for an honorable well-paid living. She wanted to marry her fiance Abu Sari' (Farid Shawqi), the leader of the porters and defender of their rights and interests. Sari' was a straigtforward, tough guy who was loyal to his comrades and to his love. Kinawy loved Hannouma with a love that knew no bounds. He wanted her for himself and he revealed his love to her. Hannouma thought the first thing he wanted was her body to satisfy his lust, but he convinced her that he wanted to marry her and go away with her to a village far from Cairo Station. At that time Abu Sari' was busy forming a union for the porters and defending their right to a suitabl wage, medical care and help with emergencies. Then Kinawy suddenly discovered the truth: Hannouma refused to marry him because she loved Abu Sari'. He saw her in his arms and heard about her trip with him to the village for marriage. Kinawy overcame his emotional burden and decided to kill Hannouma. The people at Cairo Station realized Kinawy had lost his mind and undertook under Abu Sari's leadership to save Hannouma from her mad lover. At the last moment Hannouma was saved from the killer's clutches and Cairo Station went back to its tumultuoous life.

Appearances (1945)

Appearances [al-mazaher] (1945) - (Ragaa Abdou) Egyptian stone litho film poster

This film was directed by Kamal Selim, who also wrote the story, screenplay and dialogue. Cinematography was by Abdelhalim Nasr. Plot summary: Baheyya lived in a rural neighborhood with her sick aunt. She met the mechanic Mahmoud and agreed to marry him. Mahmoud and Baheyya continued to care for the sick aunt until the illness overcame her. Before she died the aunt told Baheyya she had a wealthy uncle named Redwan. After she died Baheyya sought Mahmoud's help finding the uncle as the aunt had advised. They finally found him; he was a good man who was affectionate towards his niece, although his wife was harsh fearing the division of half the uncle's wealth with Baheyya. She moved Baheyya to live in her uncle's palace where Baheyya discovered the truth and reclaimed her money. She aroused the envy of her uncle's executive director Nabil. Nabil was able to win her and make her fall in love with him and forget the poor mechanic Mahmoud. She married Nabil only to discover that he coveted her money. She demanded a divorce from him, realizing she needed to return to Mahmoud and get him to forgive her. Finally Mahmoud became director of her factory after insisting on it and they married.
