My Name is Satuta (1944) - (Sabah) Egyptian film program

Pictured is an original 6.5" x 9" 16-page Egyptian film program for the 1944 Hussein Fawzi film My Name is Satuta [ana satuta] starring Sabah (1927 - 2014) based on screenplay and story by Hussein Fawzi, dialogue by Hassan Tewfik and cinematograpy by George Saad. The program includes song lyrics, plot and key photographic art. Plot summary: Reshwan was a wealthy man living with his nephew Abbas. Abbas was waiting for his uncle to die so he could inherit his wealth, but Reshwan was hoping not to die before finding his granddaughter (who had been separated from her father) so she could inherit his considerable wealth. The granddaughter Satuta [Sabah] was an artist who worked in a traveling theater troupe; Reshwan found information about her location and went to the troupe to see her, but they introduced him to a differerent girl, also named Satuta. The troup was plannning to use the impersonator to get Reshwan's money, but then after a series of encounters Reshwan finally developed an attachment for the substitute Satuta. Only then did he realize the truth, embrace the right Satuta and give his wealth to her. However he did not abandon the other Satuta who had pretended to be his granddaughter. He kept her with him so he could take care of her.

And Love Returned (1961) - (Samia Gamal) Egyptian one-sheet

This 1960 Egyptian black-and-white film was directed by Fatin Abdel Wahab, screenplay by Mohamed Abu Youssef, dialogue by Amin Yussef Ghurab, cinematography Aly Hassan; it tells the story of a cabaret dancer in Alexandria named Leila [Samia Gamal]. Many of the customers liked her but she resisted their offers of marriage and requests that she become their mistress. She had one importunate pursuer named Hamada [Ahmed Mazhar] whom she always resisted. He was shocked when she married another man named Abbas [Mahmoud El-Meliguy], with whom she ran the cabaret after they were married. Hamada, shocked and disappointed, disappeared. Then Abbas apparently died in a fire on his boat. Hamada returned and this time she accepted him. Abbas, who had not actually died, came back and tried to separate them but could not do so.

Wonderful Memories (1961) - (Ahmed Mazhar) Egyptian one-sheet

This is a 23.75" x 34.5" Egyptian poster designed by Stamatis Vassiliou for the 1961 film Wonderful Memories AKA maa al-zekriat written and directed by Saad Arafa and starring Ahmed Mazhar as Sherif. Plot summary: While playing a role in a film the actor Sherif shot his colleague Elham [Mariam Fakhr Eddine] after the sexually tormented hunchback Madbouli [Salah Mansour] had maliciously replaced the blanks in Sherif's pistol with live bullets; this was a profound shock to Sherif. His cousin Amal [Nadia Lutfi] tried in vain to soothe him, but she looked too much like Elham. Her feelings for him turned into deep love, made stronger by his determination to overcome his loneliness and obsession with memories. The facts slowly emerged about the incident in which Elham had died.

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster by an unknown artist for the 1963 El-Sayed Ziada film Forgive My Mistake based on a story by Aziz Armani, screenplay and dialogue by El-Sayed Ziada, cinematography by Zakaria Mansour and starring Samira Ahmed as Leila. Plot summary: Hussein Mokhtar [Kamal Al-Shennawi] did not care about marriage until he fell in love with a poor girl named Leila. Before marrying her he discovered she was a prostitute. This broke his heart but because of his love for her he forgave her, even though his mother tried to get him to end his relationship with her. According to Egyptian film encyclopedist Mahmoud Qasem this poster is for a rerelease with scenes deleted and a title change of the 1962 film Take Me and My Shame [khozni bi 'ari] directed by El Sayed Ziada. In both versions of the film Samira Ahmed's character is a prostitute.

This is a 27" x 29" Egyptian one-sheet poster designed by Hassan Mazhar Gasour and Mohammad Aziz for the 1958 Youssef Maalouf film Bahbouh Effendi بحبوح افندي with screenplay and dialogue by William Basili, cinematography by Bruno Salvi and starring Ismail Yasseen as Bahbouh Effendi. Plot summary: Babouh Effendi left the country to go to Cairo with his partner in the livestock trade, the teacher Awis (Fouad Shafik). There they lived frivolously passing their time in nightclubs. They met a girl (Zahrat El-Ola) who worked in a nightclub, and they saved her from a gang. They went home with her, which caused problems for her with her neighbors, but Bahbouh married the girl the next morning after discovering that she was honorable and that she had been obliged to go to the nightclub due to circumstances beyond her control.

Shown here is a 39" x 54" Egyptian poster designed by Hassan Mazhar Gasour to promote the 1953 Salah Abouseif 98-minute black-and-white film Raya and Sekina starring Anwar Wagdi based on a screenplay by Naguib Mahfouz and Salah Abouseif after an account by journalist Lotfi Osman of actual events in 1920, with dialogue by El Sayed Bedeir and cinematography by Wahid Farid. Plot summary: This film is a dramatization of the investigation and arrest of Raya and Sekina, two serial killers in Alexandria Egypt who were the leaders of a gang responsible for the abduction and murder of 26 women. Anwar Wagdi has the role of the investigating officer Ahmed, who operates as an undercover agent, works his way into the midst of the criminal gang and eventually brings them to justice.

Shown here is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Wahib Fahmy to promote the 1963 100-minute Niazi Mostafa color film Princess of the Arabs [amiret al-arab] starring Warda al-Gazaeria and Rushdy Abaza based on Richard Wagners's Tristan and Isolde, with screenplay by Niazi Mostafa, dialogue by Bahgat Kamar and cinematography by Ibrahim Adel. Plot summary: Prince Hesham [Abdel Ghani Kamar] fell in love with the beautiful Princess Shalia [Warda al-Gazaeria] before he ever met her. He sent his nephew Mahbub [Rushdy Abaza] to find her and bring her to him so he could marry her, but when Mahbub and Shalia met they fell in love. Then Prince Hesham was obliged to leave them alone and allow them to marry.

This is a 13.5" x 19.5" Egyptian poster made by an unknown designer to promote the 123-minute 1955 Hamada Abdel Wahab black-and-white film Ismail Yasseen Meets Raya and Sekina [ismail yasseen yuqabel raya wa sekina] starring Ismail Yasseen based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Abu Seoud El-Ibiary with cinematography by Robert Tamba. Plot summary: Ismail Yasseen was with his fiance when she crashed an automobile into a house occupied by the gang of Ria and Sekina. This gang had been kidnapping girls, killing them, stealing their jewelry and burying their bodies under their house. Ismail Yasseen was afraid they would do this to him, so he decided to flee the place with his fiance. After running away Ismail Yasseen decided to tell the police where the gang was located, but they did not believe him and put him in jail. There he met a thief who did believe him and later helped him get into the home of Ria and Sekina. After attempts and chases Ismail Yasseen tried to attract the attention of the police to what had happened at the home of Ria and Sekina, so they could find and arrest the gang. Ismail Yasseen, his fiance and the repentant thief left the home of Ria and Sekina after they had been rescued from being murder victims.

Cairo Station (1958) - (dir: Youssef Chahine) Egyptian one-sheet

This landmark Egyptian film was directed by Youssef Chahine. Cinematography was by Alevise Orfanelli, dialogue was by Mohammad Abu Youssef and the story and screenplay were by Abdel Hai Adib. It is on film critic Ahmad Al-Hadari's 2007 list of the 100 most important Egyptian films. Plot summary: Kinawy (Youssef Chahine) was a hard-working newspaper seller at Cairo Station who suffered from a physical handicap. He was always looking at the pictures of beautiful women in the publications he sold. Hannouma (Hind Rostom) was an attractive young woman who worked at Cairo Station selling ice cream and leading a team of workers at the official canteen. She wanted to live a free life and work for an honorable well-paid living. She wanted to marry her fiance Abu Sari' (Farid Shawqi), the leader of the porters and defender of their rights and interests. Sari' was a straigtforward, tough guy who was loyal to his comrades and to his love. Kinawy loved Hannouma with a love that knew no bounds. He wanted her for himself and he revealed his love to her. Hannouma thought the first thing he wanted was her body to satisfy his lust, but he convinced her that he wanted to marry her and go away with her to a village far from Cairo Station. At that time Abu Sari' was busy forming a union for the porters and defending their right to a suitabl wage, medical care and help with emergencies. Then Kinawy suddenly discovered the truth: Hannouma refused to marry him because she loved Abu Sari'. He saw her in his arms and heard about her trip with him to the village for marriage. Kinawy overcame his emotional burden and decided to kill Hannouma. The people at Cairo Station realized Kinawy had lost his mind and undertook under Abu Sari's leadership to save Hannouma from her mad lover. At the last moment Hannouma was saved from the killer's clutches and Cairo Station went back to its tumultuoous life.

Bread and Salt (1940) - (Naima Akef) Egyptian one-sheet

This is a 27" x 39" undated rerelease Egyptian poster designed by Ahmed Fouad for the 1949 Hussein Fawzi film Bread and Salt written and directed by Hussein Fawzi with dialogue by Badei Khayri and starring Naima Akef as Botheina. Plot summary: A boy lived in the Bread and Salt neighborhood and worked for one of the rich people. He loved the girl next door, who reciprocated, but she suddenly changed, turned away from his love and behaved in a disagreeable way that was unlike the warm nature of the Bread and Salt neighborhood. The boy criticized her behavior but it became clear that she was turning away because of her special family circumstances; here the people in the neighborhood were working together to overcome the problems she was facing. However they were unable to help her and she ran away from the neighborhood to work in a nightclub. The boy was having problems at his job with the rich man, who had blind faith in him. People were trying to create a division between the two of them. The people in another neighborhood were trying to prove that the boy was upright and honest, and the girl came back to stand by her neighbor. Conditions improved and the boy went back to his job with reputation restored. Conditions also improved with the girl's family so they ended up getting married.

And Love Returned [wa 'ada al-hob] (1961) - (Samia Gamal) Egyptian undated rerelease film poster

This film was directed by Fatin Abdel Wahab, screenplay by Mohamed Abu Youssef, dialogue by Amin Yussef Ghurab, cinematography Aly Hassan; it tells the story of a cabaret dancer named Lola (Samia Gamal). Many of the customers liked her but she resisted their offers of marriage or requests that she become their mistress. She had one importunate pursuer (Ahmed Mazhar) whom she always resisted. This one was was shocked when she married another man (Mahmoud El-Meliguy), with whom she later ran the cabaret after they were married. The shocked and disappinted young suitor disappeared. Then the husband apparently died in a fire on his boat. The young suitor returned to reaappear in the life of the dancer, and this time she accepted him. The husband, who had not actually died, returned and tried to separate the two of them but could not do so.
