This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Gasour and Morteda Anise for a 1978 film biography of Taha Husayn. The film was directed by Atef Salem based on a story by Kamal al-Malakh with screenplay and dialogue by D. Rafiq al-Saban, Samir Abdel Azeem and Moussa Sabry; cinematography was by Ibrahim Saleh. Plot summary: Taha Husayn was born in poverty in upper Egypt in the province of Al-Mina. He became blind because of the poverty and ignorance that were prevalent in society, but he learned how to overcome the problems of blindness, how to compensate for it with hearing, how to succeed with books and even how to get admitted to Al-Azhar University and succeed with his studies there. He later became a candidate for literature studies in the city of Montpelier France while he was on a government mission there. He went there with his brother who looked after him and helped him deal with adverse circumstances. He met his lifetime French friend Susan, who helped him with reading. Love developed between them while he was studying for his doctorate and they married after he received his diploma. In Cairo Taha Husayn was appointed professor and then dean at a university. He then became minister of education and waged an intellectual struggle with the people in the government to make education free for all people.

This is a 27" x 39" undated rerelease Egyptian poster designed by an unknown artist to promote the 1945 103-minute Anwar Wagdi black-and-white musical Leila Daughter of the Poor [leila bint al-foqara] starring Laila Mourad as Leila based on a story by Anwar Wagdi with screenplay by Kamal Salim and dialogue by Badei Khayri. Cinematography was by Mohamed Abdel Azim. Plot summary: Leila was a poor girl living in the Seyyeda Zeinab district of Cairo. A lady invited her to her mansion and introduced her to Officer Wahid Mokhtar [Anwar Wagdi]. Leila was impressed by the mansion and its ceremonies and soon became outgoing and cheerful. Wahid was drawn to Leila and asked her alleged father Darwish Basha [Bechara Wakim] for her hand in marriage. Then he learned Darwish Basha was not really her father. Wahid thought Leila had deceived him; he went to see her in Seyyeda Zeinab and cancelled the marriage offer. After that Wahid, who still loved Leila, met Darwish Basha and told him what had happened. Darwish Basha advised Wahid to apologize to Leila, which he did. Darwish Basha then pledged he would leave his wealth to Leila and asked Wahid's father to arrange for Wahid to marry her. The reason the Basha had left his wealth to Leila became clear to all those who had been invited to the wedding when her origins became known. Leila left the wedding in despair, but Wahid persuaded his father to move the wedding party to Seyyeda Zeinab, where the proceedings were completed.

This is a 13" x 19" Egyptian lobby card for the 1969 Chadi Abdel Salam 102-minute color film The Night of Counting the Years [al-mumia'] based on a story by Chadi Abdel Salam, cinematography by Abdel Aziz Fahmy and starring Ahmed Marei as Wannis. Plot summary: This film is considered one of Egypt's greatest. A clan in upper Egypt is plundering a cache of mummies and selling them on the antiquities black market. The Antiquities Service eventually finds the perpetrators and their stolen goods after one of the clan members breaks away and reports what is happening. The lobby card shows Nadia Lutfi in her role as Zeena. As in this example, an Egyptian lobby card consists of a still mounted on a heavy cardboard backing with key art. In Arabic these cards are known as cartonat.

Plot summary: This film is a dramatization of the investigation and arrest of Raya and Sekina, two serial killers in Alexandria Egypt who were the leaders of a gang responsible for the abduction and murder of 26 women. Anwar Wagdi has the role of the investigating officer Ahmed, who operates as an undercover agent, works his way into the midst of the criminal gang and eventually brings them to justice.

Pictured is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Morteda Anise to promote the 1981 Ahshraf Fahmy 90-minute color film The Beast Within [al-wahsh dakhel al-insan] based on the 1867 Emile Zola novel Therese Raquin with screenplay and dialogue by Abdel Hay Adib and cinematography by Wahid Farid. Plot summary: Sodfa suffered because of her husband Sayed, who was her idiotic cousin. They lived together in his mother's house in Abu Qir. After returning from the completion of his studies, Mahmoud began supervising a brick factory owned by Sayed's mother. This upset Sodfa, who had been in a relationship with Mahmoud. Mahmoud confirmed his love and she asked him to marry her after she asked for a divorce from Sayed, who admitted he had overheard them talking. Mahmoud got into a fight with Sayed and Sodfa encouraged him to kill him. Mahmoud met the dancer Lawahez, which made Sodfa jealous and they quarreled. The mother learned the truth about her son's murderer after she overheard a conversation between the lovers and she became paralyzed. Lawahez was murdered and the police called Sodfa as a witness. Mahmoud thought the police had discovered their crime. He wrote a letter of confession to exonerate Sodfa and gave it to one of the people in town; when Mahmoud learned the truth he went with Sodfa to try to recover the letter before it was given to the police, but they were both killed when when a wheel flew off their horse-drawn wagon and it crashed into the Nile.
