Revolt in the City [ثورة المدينة] - (Sabah)

Revolt in the City (1955) - (Sabah) Egyptian oversize poster

This is a 33" x 44" oversize Egyptian poster designed by Studio Adly to promote the 1955 Helmy Rafla film Revolt in the City [thawret al-medina] starring Mohammad Fawzi and Sabah based on screenplay and dialogue by Nairuz Abdel Malek with cinematography by Masud Isa. Plot summary: This is a musical melodrama showcasing the singing talents of Sabah and Mohammad Fawzi. Fatima's [Sabah] mother died giving birth to her and her father [Hussein Riad] believed women died immediately after giving birth. Fatima was raised believing this too, so she avoided marriage and the idea of having children. However she still fell in love with Ahmad [Mohammad Fawzi], a boy from a rich family, and he asked her to marry him. Then her father was killed in a factory accident and combined impact of mourning her father and her psychological anti-marriage complex caused her to spend a lot of time resisting before she finally accepted Ahmad's proposal. After marriage, Fatima had children and was expecting to die, but she did not die. This resolved her fear of dying because of childbirth and she went on with her life in "happily ever after" mode. The "revolt" theme in the title and on the poster is about an incident in the film where the family home was destroyed in a riot while Fatima was still a child, and has nothing at all to do with the main story. The image on the poster of Mohammad Fawzi carrying Sabah as an adult is from a different part of the film that is unrelated to the riot.

Cast and crew: Sabah, Mohammad Fawzi, Hussein Riad, Helmy Rafla, Ahmed Allam, Wedad Hamdy, Masud Isa, Shafik Noureddin, Hussein Ismail, Nairuz Abdel Malek, Qadria Qadri, Mohamed Kamel, Mohamed Sabih, Suleiman al-Guindy, Abdel Moneim Ismail, Ragaa Youssef, Qadria Kamel, Doha Nagdi

Return of the Prodigal Son [عودة الابن الضال] (1976) - (dir: Youssef Chahine)

The Return of the Prodigal Son (1976) - (dir: Youssef Chahine) Egyptian one-sheet

This an original folded 27" x 39" Egyptian movie poster designed by Raouf for the 1976 Youssef Chahine film Return of the prodigal son freely adapted from the 1907 André Gide novel, produced in Egypt and Algeria with screenplay by Salah Jahine and Youssef Chahine and starring Ali Mahrez as Ali. Plot summary: "Return of the Prodigal Son is another Chahine parable set between the Arab-Israeli wars. An activist who's been jailed for more than a decade, Ali is eagerly awaited by his family. All hope that this just man will stand up against his ruthless brother's tyranny, but nobody even recognizes the prodigal when he shows up during a big party. Prison has so thoroughly crushed Ali's youth and idealism that he now allies himself with the oppressor." From the Cornell University Library web site. The film is a melodrama/musical centering on family strife in the Madbouli family heightened by the release of the family's youngest son from prison after serving ten years for construction fraud, who turns out to be a disappointment when he goes to work at his father's factory. The family lives on a farm headed by an authoritarian father [Mahmoud El-Meliguy]. The film has also been seen as an allegorical treatment of Egypt's poliitical disillusion following the death of Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918-1970), who had been criticized by some as an authoritarian leader of a police state, too dependent on the power of his personal charisma and unable to create intermediary institutions or adopt practical programs for national development.

Cast and crew: Youssef Chahine, Salah Jahine, Farouk Beloufa, Raouf, Abdel Aziz Fahmy, Shukry Sarhan, Hoda Soltan, Ayda Reyad, Mahmoud El-Meliguy, Souheir El-Mourchidy, Ali El Scherif, Ali Mahrez, Sid Ali Kouiret, Ahmed Abdel Waress, Ragaa Hussein, Ahmed Bedir, Magda El-Roomy, Hesham Selim, André Gide

Remains of a Virgin [بقايا عذراء] (196] - (Mariam Fakhr Eddine)

The Remains of a Virgin (1962) - (Mariam Fakhr Eddine) Egyptian one-sheet

This is a 27" x 39" undated rerelease Egyptian poster designed by an unknown artist to promote the 1962 Houssam El-Din Mustafa 119-minute black-and-white film The Remains of a Virgin [baqaya azraa] starring Mariam Fakhr Eddine based on a story by Ismail al-Habruk with screenplay and dialogue by Youssef El Sebai and cinematography by Mostafa Hassan. Plot summary: Nabila [Mariam Fakhr Eddine] went to Cairo to teach and on her first job she quarreled with Hoda Abdel Fattah [Magda El-Khatib], the daughter of a former minster and head of one of the nationalist political parties. Hoda had lost her mother when she was a child and this had made her stubborn and spoiled. Her father [Zaki Rostom] sent for Nabila to tell her this and a strong relationship developed between them which resulted in their marriage, even though she had been in love with the journalist Mahmoud Kamal [Shukry Sarhan] since they were children. However Mahmoud had not wanted to marry her because he was afraid a marriage with a village girl would hurt his career; he was in Algeria covering the revolution when Nabila married Abdel Fattah. He returned to Cairo with the intention of marrying her, only to find that he had missed his opportunity. Nabila was also still in love with Mahmoud and they remained friends. Mahmoud was later falsely accused of a political murder and sentenced to death, but Nabila testified at the trial that he had been with her, so he was acquitted. However they were never able to marry.
