Hercules Unchained (1959) - (Steve Reeves) Egyptian one-sheet
This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Moaty for a 1989 rerelease of the 1959 Pietro Francisci film Hercules Unchained AKA Ercole e la regina di Lidia based on a story by Pietro Francisci based on the Sophocles play Aedipus at Colonus, the Aeschylus play The Seven against Thebes, screenplay by Ennio De Concini and Pietro Francisci and starring Steve Reeves as Hercules. Plot summary: Hercules is made an amnesiac because of water from a magic spring he drinks while on his way to Thebes to intervene in a quarrel between two brothers disputing the throne. He then becomes captive of Queen Omphale of Lydia [Sylvia Lopez]. Omphale makes Hercules her love slave, but everyone except Hercules, who has forgotten his own name, knows his days are numbered because Omphale will turn him into a statue when she's done with him. Young Ulysses [Gabriele Antonini] tries to help Hercules recover his memory while Iole [Sylva Koscina], the wife of Hercules, finds herself in mortal danger because Eteocles [Sergio Fantoni] plans to throw her to the wild beasts in his arena for entertainment. After remembering who he is and killing three tigers Hercules is able to rescue his wife; he then helps the army of Thebes repel mercenaries hired by Polynices. The two brothers kill each other when they fight for the throne, after which the high priest Creon [Carlo D'Angelo] is made ruler by popular acclaim.
